Nikon Coolpix S8100 Digital Camera Unboxing and First Impressions Video

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 08:00 AM

The Nikon Coolpix S8100 is a point and shoot digital camera in what I like to call the "Pocket Superzoom" category; you get 10x to 12x zoom on most cameras in this category, but in a camera body that's small enough to easily slip into your pocket. The S8100 has 10x zoom (30mm to 300mm) and an f/3.5 to f/5.6 lens. The lack of a nice f/2.0 aperture and the 1/2.3" image sensor means you're not going to be getting those nice photos with a blurred background, but hey, you can't have everything at this size/price point. The macro close-up mode works at 1cm, and the three inch 921K screen is a TFT LCD with an anti-reflection coating. Read more...

The Nikon D3100 DLSR: Unboxing and First Impressions

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 02:30 PM

The D3100, announced back in August, is an entry-level DSLR from Nikon, but the list of features and specs might surprise you: the 14.2 megapixel CMOS sensor is at the heart of this camera, giving it ISO 100 to 3200 (with a high ISO 12,800 option), 3 frames per second continual shooting, 1080p 24fps MPEG/h.264 video with continual auto focus, an 11-point autofocus system with 3D tracking, 420-segment RGB II metering, automatic image sensor cleaning, in-camera retouch options (including trimming of video clips), and a built-in pop-up flash. It's a very capable camera for just under the $700 mark.

I've had a few entry-level Nikon DSLRs over the past couple of years; I got a Nikon D60, sold it, then bought the Nikon D5000 (and reviewed it here), and sold it to purchase the D3100. I quite liked the D5000, but the video functionality was hobbled by the lack of auto-focus. The D3100 brings 1080p video with auto-focus to the table, along with a slight bump in resolution and several other enhancements over the D5000. Check out the two-part unboxing and first impressions video after the break. Fire your questions my way after watching the videos. Read more...

A First Look at the Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z: Reach Out and Touch It

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 07:00 AM

This is my unboxing and first impressions video of the Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z all-in-one desktop computer. The M90z features a 23 inch, 16:9, 1920 x 1080 touch screen display, 4 GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, a DVD burner, uses the Intel GMA HD GPU, and is powered by an Intel Core i5 650 running at 3.2 Ghz (with turbo boost up to 3.46 Ghz). The i5 CPU has two cores, and supports hyperthreading, so up to four threads of processing can occur. The M90z I'm reviewing came with Windows 7 Professional 32-bit...which, sadly, means the system can only access 2.8 GB of the 4 GB of RAM. It's a huge waste, and I don't know why Lenovo didn't go with a 64-bit OS. You can order it with a 64-bit OS of course.

Lenovo ThinkCentre A70z All-in-One Desktop Computer Unboxing and First Impressions

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 07:00 AM

Above is part one of an unboxing and first impressions video of the Lenovo ThinkCentre A70z, an all-in-one desktop computer designed for the SOHO market (small office/home office). This is a corporate-looking machine, so it doesn't win any awards in the looks department, but it gets the job done in a compact, power-efficient manner. Read more...

Dell's New Mini 10: Unboxing & First Impressions

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 07:00 AM

Above is part one of an unboxing and first impressions video of the new (as of February 2010) Dell Mini 10, a netbook that represents Dell's second generation product. The New Dell Mini 10 is powered by an Atom N450, part of the Pinetrail chipset, running at 1.66 Ghz. It has 1 GB of RAM, and this model I purchased from Dell Canada has a 5400 RPM, 250 GB hard drive. It features 802.11b/g WiFi, but this model I have doesn't have Bluetooth (nor was it an option at the time I purchased it). Check your local Dell Web site to see if they're offering Bluetooth. It has a 56WHr Lithium-Ion Battery (6-cell), a 10.1" wide screen display (1024 x 600 pixels), and an integrated 1.3 megapixel Webcam. It's using Windows 7 Starter Edition for the operating system. After the break is part two of the video. Read more...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 Waterproof Camera Unboxing

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 07:30 AM

This is an unboxing and first impressions video of the rugged and waterproof Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 [Affiliate]. This camera has a 4.6x optical zoom, a 12.1 megapixel CCD sensor, and can shoot 720p video in AVCHD Lite format. It's dustproof, can be dropped from five feet, and is waterproof to 10 feet. It also features optical image stabilization, a 2.7-inch 230,000-dot LCD display, and all the usual features such as face recognition and smart presets. It comes in orange, green, or silver. I purchased the orange one, largely because I thought a bright orange camera would be harder to lose on a beach or under water. The full specs can be found here. Read more...

HP dm3 Laptop Unboxing & First Impressions

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 07:00 AM

This is my unboxing and first impressions video of the HP dm3 [Affiliate]; the dm3 is a new laptop from HP that's an evolution of the dv2 - it's thin, light, and not very expensive. In fact, I never did my review video of the dv2 - just an unboxing video - because HP discontinued the dv2 about five months after they launched it. Bizarre, no? It's probably for the best though. There was a lot to like about the dv2, but the fact that the hot air vent was at the front of the left side, right where your hand would typically rest, was a real problem. Read more...

Unboxing Photos of the HP Envy 15

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.notebooks.com/2009/11/06...-photo-gallery/

"As configured, the HP Envy 15 is the most powerful five pound notebook on the market. As you can see in the image below, this envy 15 comes with an Intel Core i7-720QM processor, dual 160GB solid state drives, 16GB of DDR3 RAM and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830 graphics with 1GB of deicated graphics memory."

I'm eyeing the HP Envy 15 for my next laptop - my XPS M1330 is starting to feel a little aged, though it still stacks up nicely against most other notebooks in the spec department - so I'm eager to read everything I can about the Envy 15. It blends the opposing traits of a powerful CPU with great battery life by including the battery slice in the box, which is excellent - it's one less thing to buy. I've seen the Envy 15 in person and there are two things I'm iffy on: the 1920 x 1080 resolution is really high for a 15.6 inch screen, and I'm not sure if bumping font sizes (or the DPI) would be enough to make it workable. The second thing is HP, for some bizarre reason, went with a very "girly" floral-style pattern on the lid. I hate the way it looks, so I'd be looking to slap a decal from DecalGirl on there right away...which seems ridiculous to me. I'm not aware of any other laptops out there that have the Core i7 mobile CPU but still manage decent battery life...any suggestions?

Nikon D5000 Unboxing & First Impressions

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 07:00 AM

This is an unboxing and first impressions video of the Nikon D5000 DSLR. The D5000 has a 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, can record 720p videos at 24fps (MJPEG format). The 2.7 inch screen flips down and rotates around to face the front. It also has 19 auto-exposure scene modes, up to 4fps shooting, one-button Live View, ISO sensitivity from 200 to 3200, built-in image sensor cleaning, 11-point autofocus system with 3D focus tracking, auto active D-Lighting, in-camera image retouching with special effects, and more. Dell's Gorgeous Adamo Laptop Unboxed

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 01:00 PM

This is an unboxing and first impressions video of the Dell Adamo laptop. This is easily the most impressive Dell product I've ever looked at from a design perspective - if you took the name Dell off the laptop, you'd never know it was created by the world's second biggest computer maker. The materials, the design, the build-quality, the fit and finish, the attention to detail: all are mind-blowingly excellent. But the hardware performance and price tag? Much less impressive.

This is the "Admire" model, which features a 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (SU9300), 2 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD drive, Windows Vista 64-bit, a 13.4 inch 16:9 aspect ratio 1366 x 768, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, Bluetooth 2.0, a back-lit keyboard, two USB ports, one USB/eSATA combo port, gigabit Ethernet, Display Port out (it comes with an adaptor for Display Port to DVI), 802.11n WiFi, built-in speakers, and a 40-watt hour battery that's rated to last 5 hours. The HP Mini 110: A Refined Netbook

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 11:00 AM

This is an review video of the HP Mini 110 XP Edition [Affiliate], a follow-up video to my unboxing and first impressions video. This netbook is a second-generation unit, following on the heels of the HP Mini 1000 released in 2008. The HP Mini 110 that I'm looking at features a 1.6 Ghz Atom N270 processor, 1 GB of DDR2 RAM (easily upgradeable to 2 GB), a 160 GB 5400 RPM hard drive, integrated 802.11b/g WiFI, and a 10.1 inch LED Anti-glare (matte) 16:9 aspect-ratio wide screen at 1024 x 576 resolution, driven by an Intel GMA950 graphics processor. It's running Windows XP SP3.

There's a webcam of unknown resolution (likely VGA), and the finish is "Black Swirl". "White Swirl" and "Pink Swirl" are also available. There is no CD/DVD drive, and the version I'm looking at has a 3 cell battery. Read more...

Dell Studio 14z Unboxing & First Impressions Video

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 09:30 AM

This is an unboxing and first impressions video of the Dell Inspiron Studio 14z (I mistakenly thought it was called the Inspiron 14z, but it's not an Inspiron, it's a Studio notebook). This notebook, shown here in ruby red, is a little different that most notebooks in that it lacks a CD/DVD drive - but it's no netbook! It has a 14 inch, 16:9 aspect ratio screen running at 1600 x 900 resolution, which is Dell's 900p resolution option (an upgrade). The standard resolution is 720p, which is 1280 x 720. Read more...

HP Pavilion dv2 Unboxing and First Impressions

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 11:00 AM

This is an unboxing and first impressions video of the HP Pavilion dv2 notebook (the dv2z-1199us) in moonlight white. This thin and light notebook from HP, running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, features the AMD Turion Neo X2 Dual-Core CPU (1.6 Ghz, 1 MB L2 cache), a 320 GM 5400 RPM hard drive, 4 GB of RAM, an external Blu-ray ROM/DVD burner drive, a 1.3 megapixel Web cam, 12.1 inch WXGA (1280 x 800) BrightView screen, 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3410 GPU, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, 5-in-1 memory card reader, and powered by a 6-cell battery. Unboxing the Dell Inspiron Mini 10

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 05:46 PM

Today the courier delivered a box I was looking forward to opening: this is an unboxing and first impressions video of the Dell Inspiron Mini 10, a new netbook model that Dell has just released. As configured from Dell Canada, it cost me $559 CAD. The same configuration on Dell.com as of March 19th costs $504 USD. This Mini 10 is cherry red in colour, uses the Intel Atom Z530 (1.6 Ghz) CPU, has 1 GB of DDR2 RAM, uses Windows XP SP3, has a 10.1 inch 16:9 aspect ratio screen (1024 x 576 resolution), a 160 GB 5400 RPM 2.5 inch hard drive, a 1.3 megapixel Webcam, a 802.11g WiFi card, and is powered by a 3-cell 24 WHr battery.

I mention in the review that one of the issues right off the bat with the Dell Mini 10 is the cost: I can order an Acer Aspire One in ruby red, today, for $459.99 CAD, a full $100 less expensive than the Dell Mini 10. The Acer Aspire one comes with 160 GB of storage, 1 GB of RAM, and uses a slightly older CPU - the Intel Atom N270 - but it's the same clock speed as the newer Z530 that the Dell uses. Surprisingly, the Acer also comes with a 6-cell battery. The build quality on the Dell Mini 10 is excellent, but $100 better? That's the question. I'll let you know once I get a chance to use it more - watch for my full video review a couple of weeks from now!

HP Mini 1000 XP Edition Unboxing and First Impressions

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 01:00 PM

A few days before leaving for CES 2009, I received an HP Mini 1000 for review - I'd been trying to get my hands on one of these since they were first announced, and was sadly unsuccessful. They say good things some to those who wait, and I was sent not only the HP Mini 1000 XP Edition, but also the HP Mini 1000 Vivian Tam edition. The Vivian Tam edition, which we posted some glorious photos of last year, was specifically for my wife to test out. I'll be doing another Real World Review to cover the Vivian Tam Mini 1000, but when it comes to the regular Mini 1000 I'll be doing the usual: videos!

I managed to shoot and edit this unboxing and first impressions video the night before I left for CES. The unit they sent me is the high-end configuration: Windows XP SP3, and in the configuration I was sent, costs $489 USD directly from HP. It has an Intel 1.6 Ghz Atom CPU, 1 GB of RAM, a 60 GB 4500 RPM hard drive, an SDHC card reader, two USB ports, 802.11 b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, and a 3-cell battery. The screen resolution is 1024 x 600, though HP strangely lists it was 1024 x 576 on the box. Read more...

Dell Studio Hybrid Desktop PC Unboxing and First Impressions

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 01:32 PM

This is an unboxing and first impressions video of the Dell Studio Hybrid, a desktop PC running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. Configured with an Intel Core 2 Duo T2390 (1.86 Ghz) CPU, 3 GB of DDR2 RAM, a 250 GB 5400 RPM hard drive, an 8x slot-loading DVD burner, and an Intel X3100 GPU. The colour is "Ruby", and cost me $744 Canadian with taxes direct from Dell.

[click through to YouTube to see it in higher quality]

My first impressions of the hardware design are very favourable - all except with the colour. If I had watched this video I would have realized that the shell is semi-transparent, so it doesn't have the rich gloss red I was hoping it would have. It doesn't look bad, but it's not what I expected. I'll be connecting it to a monitor and firing it up next.
