IE9 Trounces Rival Browsers in Socially-Engineered Security Attacks

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home News" @ 02:37 PM

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscent...r_security.html

"A new report from NSS Labs studies how various Web browsers perform when it comes to blocking socially-engineered attacks. The startling results show that Internet Explorer isn't just better than rival browsers like Chrome and Firefox--but leaves competitors completely in the dust."

I've been using IE9 beta on the Lenovo M90z and it's quite impressive; it has the svelte space-saving UI of Chrome, and apparently also has excellent security when it comes to protecting users from socially-engineered attacks. This is a nice win for Microsoft!

Win a Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z Worth $1308 USD!

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 02:00 PM

I'm a couple days late getting this contest launched - things have been hectic - but here we go! I have a top-spec Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z to give away to one lucky Thoughts Media reader/YouTube viewer.

Here are the three things you have to do to be entered in this contest:

  1. Subscribe to our YouTube channel
  2. Post a comment on the YouTube contest video telling me how/where you'd use this computer. Don't post the comment here on Digital Home Thoughts though, only on the YouTube video.
  3. Favorite the contest video on YouTube (instructions how are in the video)

That's it! One entry per person, and the contest closes at 5 PM GMT -7 on December 13th, 2010. Good luck everyone - the winner will be chosen randomly from amongst all the comments posted. The winner will be contacted via YouTube direct message, and will have 48 hours to respond back to me to claim their prize. If the winner hasn't fulfilled all three of the requirements above, I'll pick someone else.

Please note: due to shipping constraints, this contest is open to people in North America only. You guys know I always try to do world-wide contests, but this is a physically BIG prize so as you can imagine shipping world-wide would be a bit problematic.

Remember this contest is part of a much bigger contest with 20 other sites, so be sure to check out the other contests that are happening right now!

Review of the Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z: A Powerful, Capable Office Computer

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 03:35 PM

This is my review video of the Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z all-in-one desktop computer. The M90z features a 23 inch, 16:9, 1920 x 1080 touch screen display, 4 GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, a DVD burner, uses the Intel GMA HD GPU, and is powered by an Intel Core i5 650 running at 3.2 Ghz (with turbo boost up to 3.46 Ghz). The i5 CPU has two cores, and supports hyperthreading, so up to four threads of processing can occur. The M90z I'm reviewing now has 64-bit Windows 7 Professional on it, unlike when it was first unboxed. Being able to access the full 4 GB of RAM instead of only 2.8 GB helped me gain a bit over a 10% improvement in the PC Mark Vantage score; details are in the video.

Other features on the M90z include gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n WiFi, a 2 megapixel Webcam with a physical privacy screen and dual microphones, six USB ports, DisplayPort out for running a second monitor, VGA input for using the M90z as a display (laptop, gaming console, etc.), an SDHC memory card reader, and audio in/out. It has a three year warranty. Read more...

The $46,000 Lenovo M90z Giveaway Dual-Contest

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 12:12 AM

Everybody likes winning prizes, and in partnership with Lenovo, a bunch of tech sites are giving away one Lenovo M90z each. You can check out my first impressions video of it here, and my full review video is coming soon. The unit Lenovo is giving away via each site contest is the maxed-out model: 23 inch touch screen, Intel Core i5 3.2 Ghz CPU, 500 GB hard drive, 4 GB RAM, 802.11n WiFi, DVD burner, and a current retail cost of $1308 USD (I just priced it out today). I've been using the review unit I was sent in my kitchen for the past two months, and Windows 7 plus a touch screen makes for a really compelling combination. Without further ado, here are all of the sites that are taking part in this contest:

I'll be making a separate announcement about our own contest here tomorrow - I'm a day late, but this contest will be simple and fun.

What's the "dual contest" angle you might be asking? Check this out:

"In addition, Lenovo wants to gain more exposure for medical and educational deployments of the M90z and their other all-in-one (AIO) products, and is asking for your help. They've assembled 3 packages of five (5) M90z units each and want your help in giving them away. The target winner would be a worthy medical or educational institution such as a clinic, hospital, school, community center, adult education facility, etc located in US/CA. And to be clear, Lenovo is seeking to further associate their brand and the M90z in particular with business-focused deployments of touch- and non-touch-enabled AIO desktops in the US and Canada; it's just that they don't know exactly which entities should receive these packages. But we've told them that you and your readers do know, and what's more, can help in selecting who should get them!"

You, the Digital Home Thoughts community, will be able to submit names of worthy organizations that could use five Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z computers and put them to good use. The guidelines:

  • Organization must be located in US or Canada
  • Medical, education or similar community focus
  • Preference will be given to non-profits or organizations dedicated to social good
  • Must have a concrete application for five touch-enabled M90z's

I'll be doing up a separate post on the 9th to get the names of organizations from you, so you have until then to reach out to groups that you work with and figure out how they'd use three of these awesome touch-screen computers. Stay tuned!

A First Look at the Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z: Reach Out and Touch It

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 07:00 AM

This is my unboxing and first impressions video of the Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z all-in-one desktop computer. The M90z I'm reviewing came with Windows 7 Professional 32-bit...which, sadly, means the system can only access 2.8 GB of the 4 GB of RAM. It's a huge waste, and I don't know why Lenovo didn't go with a 64-bit OS. You can order it with a 64-bit OS of course.

Lenovo M90z: Got Any Questions?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 03:30 PM

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/landing_p...entre/2010/m90z

I've been asked to take part in a reviewers' program for the Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z - you might think of the M90z as the bigger brother to the A70z (which I've unboxed and reviewed); it has a bigger screen (23.5 inches) that's optionally touch-enabled (my review unit is), 2 GB to 4 GB RAM, a 320 or 500 GB hard drive, a variety of CPU options ranging from the lowly 2.8 Ghz Intel Pentium G6950 up to an Intel Core i5-650 clocking in at 3.2 Ghz. There's also an HD webcam, a chassis that's easier to open and upgrade, and a few other features that the A70z lacked.

My plan is to implement the M90z in a slightly different way than usual: I want to set it up as a kitchen computer. The touch screen is a key component for that scenario, but without any special touch screen software (a la HP TouchSmart) I'm curious to know how well it will work.

Before I get started with the unboxing and first impressions video, are there any things you want to make sure I cover in the first video, or the subsequent review video?
