Wired: Digital Cinema Show 'n' Tell

"Digital cinema developers descended [in Las Vegas] last week to convince theater owners that the future of their industry has finally arrived. But, after years of failed promises, newfangled confections like dark-chocolate Raisinets appeared to get a better hearing (two thumbs up.)...But this year is different, they insist, thanks to recently approved technical standards and the first faint signs of a tipping point."

I keep waiting for digital cinema to arrive, and now I understand the reasons behind the delay. When tech companies are touting a 2K-pixel digital projector, and Sony goes ahead and releases a 4K projector, of course no one's going to invest in 2K technology. At least we now have a technical standard for digital cinema, which, hopefully, will get the ball rolling a little faster. On a side note: Digital cinema is really only 2000 pixels wide? Are their pixels different than the pixels I use? Sure that's huge compared to DVD or even HDTV, but I guess I expected it to be higher considering the size of the screen...
