Holographic DVDs

"Hitachi and Maxell are working very hard on the next generation of discs. Their concepts are not exactly equal, but they are looking beyond formats like HD DVD and BD (BluRay Disc). Capacities of the disks are set at 100Gb per side and are expected to climb as the development continues. More impressive are the transfer rates of 100Mbps."
No mention of how close this is to actually being a real product or what the cost will be. Is this the first shot in the battle to see what will be next after the HD/BluRay battle is over?
