Dell Simplifies Consumer Product Line-up

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home News" @ 06:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/21/...ff-adamo-altog/

"We knew something was going on with Dell's branding with the resurrection of the XPS laptop line, and this morning we caught up with a few of the company's executives to learn all about the entire restructuring. As you can see above, there will now be three core brands -- Inspiron, XPS and Alienware -- all focusing on different "performance seekers."

Dell's product line up has grown bloated and out of control over the years, and this is a much-needed effort to streamline it. Will it help change the perception that people have as being Dell as a "budget" provider of computers? Maybe - but I think Dell also needs to focus more on releasing fewer, but better, products. Releasing a new laptop every month means less engineering and design effort put into each product - and Dell needs to do better in both.

XFX Lost a Limited Edition ATI 5970 Graphics Card...Oh Wait, I Just Got Suckered By Marketing

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 12:19 PM

I just received the above message via email, and I've never quite seen anything like this before - XFX must feel pretty strongly about losing this card to email every customer they have in their database (I haven't bought an XFX card in a couple of years). The last line of the message made me chuckle; what inconvenience is it to me that XFX lost a graphics card?

Oh wait...just before I was about to his submit on this post, I clicked on the message, and was taken to this YouTube video. Apparently this is all part of a "Gamertainment Campaign" just like that last tiny line of text says. Nicely done XFX, you tricked me - now where's the unsubscribe button...

CES 2009: Fireside Chat With HP's Fred Bullock @ CNTRSTG

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 04:52 PM

I shot more video at CES 2009 than I have at previous shows, and it seems that one of the side-effects of that is forgetting to publish all of it! This is a video that was recorded on January 8th.

At CNTRSTG, Fred Bullock, head of marketing for HP PSG (Personal Systems Group) Americas gave a "fireside chat" (the reference is explained in the video). Bullock has been with HP for about six months, so he talks about the types of changes and initiatives he's implemented at HP. If you want insight into the way HP approaches marketing, and social networks, this is a useful video to watch.
