British Music Industry Suggests Legalizing Some Music Copying

"The British equivalent of the RIAA is making the case for some fair use rights to a government-appointed review panel. The BPI submitted documents to the Gowers Review arguing that it should be legal for individuals to copy music from one medium to another, such as from CDs to iPods or other MP3 players. Doing so is currently illegal in the UK, though the law is not being enforced very strictly... The industry representatives are making it clear that this is no free-for-all proposal—piracy will still be illegal, and the BPI will continue to prosecute suspected file sharers just like our own RIAA is doing. It's just that there should be some allowances for private use of copying and transferring music between various forms of media, as long as they're all yours."
It's nice to see at least part of the music industry come around and realize we want to at the very least be able to legally rip our CDs and listen to them on our PMPs. Who knew it was technically illegal to rip a CD in the UK? Now if only the movie industry would wake up and realize we want to do the same thing with our DVDs.
