"Plextor is first with an external dual-format 8X DVD recorder. We're not quite sure why Plextor is so excited as the company has already announced an external 12X dual-format recorder, which is currently the fastest external multi-format DVD recorder. Nevertheless, if your budget won't stretch to the PlexWriter PX-712UF (£164 ex. VAT), the PlexWriter PX-708UF2 (184x52x265mm, 1.7kg) offers the same high-quality build and unique two-year on-site collect and return guarantee. A lower cost means a slower write speed however. For instance, the PlexWriter PX-708UF2 writes DVDs at 8X, rewrites DVDs at 4X, writes CDs at 48X (rewrites at 24X), reads DVD-ROMs at 16X and CD-ROMs 48X. By comparison, the flagship PlexWriter PX-712UF writes DVD+R discs at 12X (DVD-R discs at 8X). Read speeds are the same with both drives, although the PlexWriter PX-712UF comes with more software utilities."
