Slashdot has an article reporting an interview with 'digital revolutionary' Leonardo Chiariglione, "digital video pioneer and founder of the MPEG standards committee, available on the public access section Scientific American's website. In the interview Chiariglione explains the motivations and hopes for his new Digital Media Project -- an attempt to integrate existing technologies to create a transparent, universal, non-proprietary system for digital rights management."

It appears that Chiariglione has recently established the Digital Media Project, an organization of individuals and companies, which aims to formulate a new standard for digital audio and video. More information on DMP can be found on their project website. He is very concerned with "the stalemate" that he believes is crippling the development of digital media. "If things proceed according to plan, the media world will never be the same". In this interview, he talks on piracy, the rapid ubiquity of the MPEG/MP3 formats, DRM and the sale of media through online stores like iTunes. Finally, he gives his vision of the future of digital media.
