CES 2009: Fireside Chat With HP's Fred Bullock @ CNTRSTG

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 04:52 PM

I shot more video at CES 2009 than I have at previous shows, and it seems that one of the side-effects of that is forgetting to publish all of it! This is a video that was recorded on January 8th.

At CNTRSTG, Fred Bullock, head of marketing for HP PSG (Personal Systems Group) Americas gave a "fireside chat" (the reference is explained in the video). Bullock has been with HP for about six months, so he talks about the types of changes and initiatives he's implemented at HP. If you want insight into the way HP approaches marketing, and social networks, this is a useful video to watch.

CES 2009: Touch the Future (HP)

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 09:17 PM

Phil McKinney, vice president and chief technology officer for the Personal Systems Group at HP, gives a talk on the history of HP and touch computing. It's a fascinating look at where HP has been with touch, and where they're going. Phil is a world-class geek and a very smart guy. Well worth the view!

CES 2009: The HP/Voodoo Firefly Monster "Laptop"

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 12:59 PM

Rahul Sood from Voodoo Computers walks us through the never-to-be-released prototype Firefly "laptop"...it's really just a computer you can move from room to room. Rahul calls the battery a "UPS", which is likely pretty accurate. This is one monster machine, featuring a quad-core CPU, dual GPUs in SLI mode, and even two screens. Filmed at CNTRSTG.

CES 2009: The Promise of Digital Media (Part 1)

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 02:00 PM

This is part one of a three part video of a panel that was hosted by Carlos Montalvo the VP of Product Experience at HP. The topic was "The Promise of Digital Entertainment", and in essence, the discussion focused in on how the industry as a whole has failed to live up to the "digital entertainment everywhere" promise that has been made year after year at shows such as CES. The panel consisted of Ross Rubin from NPD, Terri Walsh from We Got Served, Wilson Rothman from Gizmodo, Will Smith from Maximum PC, and Richard Doherty from Envisioneering. It was interesting to listen to these experts talk about the state of the industry, though I disagree with some of them regarding the state and fate of Blu-Ray (expect that topic in a future column). Filmed at CNTRSTG.

CES 2009: AMD and Image Metrics

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 01:05 PM

AMD first shows the new HP dv2, a small computer that uses the AMD Neo processor, a 1.6 Ghz, 25 watt CPU that's part of their Yukon chipset. It's a very interesting little machine - far more powerful than a netbook, but starts at $699 USD, so not that much more expensive than most of them. AMD also talked a little about their new Phenom II CPU, and how it forms a pillar in their new Dragon platform. The Phenom II CPU has been overclocked to 6.3 Ghz with liquid nitrogen, and to 3.7 Ghz with air cooling. They stressed that they believe the experience of using a computer is about more than the speed of the CPU. I agree, except when I'm having to render a huge HD video file; then it's ALL about the speed of the CPU. They talked a little about the Fusion Render Cloud, but not in very much detail - I suspect this is still too new of an initiative to have much in the way of detail.

After AMD talked, Image Metrics got up to show what they've been able to do with ATI GPUs - and the results are quite impressive! I've also hated how artificial most face animations are in games - especially how bad the lip-sync tends to be - so I can't wait to see their technology in the games I'm playing. Filmed at CNTRSTG.

CES 2009: The Vivienne Tam HP Mini 1000 Story

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 11:33 AM

Tracy Trachta from HP talks about the Vivienne Tam HP Mini 1000; why and how they created the partnership with Vivienne Tam, what new markets they wanted to reach with the product, and what an amazing response the product has received. Filmed at CNTRSTG.

CES 2009: HP and MTV Engine Room

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 10:09 AM

Tracy Trachta from HP and SuChin Pak from MTV talk about MTV Engine Room, an HP-sponsored show where young designers from around the world competed to come up with a winning design for a new HP notebook. I'd never heard of this show before - probably because I'm in my 30's now - but I've watched an episode today and it's quite entertaining. It's like a reality show for geeks because you get to see really talented people using technology to create amazing end-results in a short period of time. This video is also interesting if you want to understand how huge companies like HP are trying to connect with the next generation of customers and grow into new markets. The winning notebook design is also shown, though I didn't really like the design at all - I preferred the design from the India team. Filmed at CNTRSTG.
