Windows Live Spaces - Does Not Play Nice with Others

Posted by Chris Gohlke in "Digital Home Talk" @ 12:00 AM

Normally I use Firefox, except for the few sites that require it, like Netflix for "Watch It Now". Although I'm always a little irked to be forced to use IE, usually the sites are pretty straightforward about the requirement. However, recently, I've come across what appears to be a little more subversive behavior on the part of Microsoft. The Women's group that is part of my neighborhood association set up a website a few months back on Windows Live Spaces. I've been regularly checking it for news about the neighborhood. A few weeks ago, instead of the normal page, I started getting a log in screen. At first I thought they had messed something up when doing an update to the site, but after asking them about it, we figured out that the log in screen only appeared in Firefox and that the site worked just fine in IE.

Screen captures after the break. Read more...

Google Launches "Chrome" Web Browser

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Software" @ 08:50 AM

Yesterday, Google launched their own Web browser. Since this is pretty big news, I decided it was worth posting network-wide. Do we really need another browser? Before yesterday, my answer would have been no - I'm a very satisfied Firefox user, and Internet Explorer 8 is shaping up quite nicely. But after watching the 90 minute Google Webcast yesterday, I was very interested in with what Google had created. There's a great online comic that walks you through why Google created the browser, and what kinds of things were important to Google when creating Chrome. I think this comic is also how the browser was leaked before Google was ready to announce it. Read more...

Firefox & Flash Problems: What's Going On?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 01:37 PM

Is anyone else out there having problems with Flash 9 and Firefox 2.0.0.12 on Windows Vista, specifically with YouTube video playback? According to Adobe's "About Flash" page I've got Flash 9 (version 9,0,115,0) installed under Firefox. The problem manifests itself when I start to watch a YouTube video: the playback will start then pause after about two seconds. Hitting play doesn't start the video. I can seek through the video once it's loaded, but I don't get any audio, or video - just still frames. Under IE7, Flash 9 and YouTube work without a problem. I have almost no Firefox add-ons installed: Google Browser Sync, IE View, and Session Manager, so I doubt any of them are causing problems. I figured an un-install and re-install would do the trick, but that hasn't helped. I'm not sure what to try next...any suggestions?
