Walmart Wants Some Vudu to Compete with Hulu

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 09:30 AM

"Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but a person briefed on the deal said the price for the company, which raised $60 million in capital, was over $100 million. Other companies, including Best Buy, Amazon.com, Comcast and the satellite company EchoStar, had also expressed interest in acquiring Vudu, according to this person, who asked for anonymity because the terms of the deal were private."

Ah Blu-ray, I hardly knew you. The battle for the next generation video delivery service is well underway, and as everyone expected, it is online. Soon, you will be able to watch any movie you want, new or old, right from the comfort of your living room without having to go to a store, Redbox, or even your mailbox. Well, for some of you, that reality is already here, and Wal-Mart's entry is only going to provide you with more options. There are some of us, living in third world countries like Canada, are presented with expensive and limited options provided to us by our telvision carriers. Hooray for regional copyright regulations! The $100 million (!!!!!) deal just further cements the idea that physical media will be relegated to smaller markets.

VUDU Does That HD "Voodoo"

Posted by Timothy Huber in "Digital Home News" @ 01:15 PM

http://www.vudu.com/press_release11.11.2008.html

"Santa Clara, CA, Nov. 11, 2008, -- VUDU announced today the availability of more than 1,100 HD titles for instant, on-demand viewing, giving the VUDU owners access to the largest library of HD content in existence. VUDU also pledged to continue to aggressively expand this HD library further in the coming weeks. The combination of this massive HD library, which spans mainstream new releases to independent titles and classics, with VUDU's two high quality HD formats, instant-start HD and the superior HDX format, make VUDU the most convenient and exciting choice for consumers who love HD content."
This press release is a couple weeks old but still worth mentioning. Over the past couple of months VUDU has been adding HD movies at a rate of 100-150 movies per week. As of this morning, there are more than 1300 HD movies listed on their site, including 202 HDX movies, in addition to their SD titles. I've had a VUDU for about year and have been pleased with the movie selection and quality. Their library has been growing at a rapid pace and the software is being regularly upgraded with new features; both positive signs.

Shortly before this announcement, Jason mentioned picking up a Blu-ray player. For now, I've decided to stick with digital streaming, the VUDU has become my primary choice. What's your opinion?

3-Way Movie Box Battlemodo

Posted by Jeremy Charette in "Smartphone Articles & Resources" @ 03:00 PM

"A few weeks back, I wrote up a piece on Vudu's high-definition video falling short of my expectations. Today I bring you a more thorough report of the three most compelling set-top boxes and their video-download capabilities. Apple TV, Vudu and Xbox 360 all have a lot going for them, but by looking at them side-by-side, you can see how their makers are all taking different paths to get to the ultimate desired end. Dive into the chart, then have a look at the screengrabs from three movies, to really get a feel for the progress, or lack of progress, in the world of HD downloads."

Interesting comparison, though in the end, there's no clear winner. I find myself a bit more opinionated though. The Xbox 360 is a very capable media player and the best Media Center Extender on the market. In both my experience and in detailed technical comparisons, downloaded HD video from Xbox Live Marketplace is very nearly comparable to HD DVD or Blu-Ray. VUDU and Apple TV don't hold a candle. Unfortunately the Xbox 360 has one huge hurdle to get past: perception. Consumers think of it as a game console first, a media player a distant second. If only Microsoft would do a better job marketing all that the 360 is capable of.
