Pansonic LUMIX TS-1: I Hardly Knew Thee...

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 10:00 AM

The Pansonic LUMIX TS-1 is a tough little camera - I reviewed mine here. It's dust-proof, water-proof to 10 feet, drop-proof from five feet, and an all-around sturdy camera. My wife carries it with her in the diaper bag for our son Logan, so that she always has a camera available when he does those cute toddler things. I figured it was the perfect choice because that diaper bag gets tossed around and this camera can take it. Late last week I discovered the threshold of what type of punishment that TS-1 can take though...witness the horror after the break. Read more...

Sony's DSC-TX5: Slim, Rugged, and Packed With Features

Posted by Reid Kistler in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 12:00 PM

"The Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 is Sony's first waterproof, freezeproof, dustproof and shockproof digital compact camera. The 10 megapixel TX5 features an "Exmor R" back-illuminated CMOS image sensor which promises to greatly improve low-light performance, resulting in cleaner images with less noise."

Ultra-slim digital cameras, with nearly all of their functions buried within a touchscreen menu system, have never been high on my personal list of "must have" devices. But based upon the comprehensive review that Photographyblog.com has done on the new Sony DSC-TX5, I may have to revise that opinion. In less than an inch of depth, this model manages to combine rugged construction with an impressive feature list that includes (among the 36 mentioned by Sony!): 4x optical zoom, 720p movie mode, a special "Panorama Mode," and several designed to improved low-light and/or motion capture photography, including the "Exmor R" image sensor, optical image stabilization, and several functions that combine multiple shots to create a single photograph with superior detail, and reduced noise and blurring. Given that this is not inexpensive - with a list price of $329 (US) - do you think that the feature set is attractive enough to warrant a purchase? Or are there competing models that might offer greater value?

Canon's PowerShot D10 Camera: Waterproof, Shockproof

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 10:00 AM

"For those with a taste for adventure, there's a camera as bold as the active life you lead. It's the Canon PowerShot D10. Waterproof, freezeproof and shockproof; it's tough enough to take what you dish out. Plus it's got all the high performance features you expect from a Canon digital camera. You've got 12.1 megapixels of resolution plus all of Canon's powerful, state-of-the-art imaging technologies so you can capture your epic experiences in breathtaking color and awesome detail."

Another area that Canon has been slow to move into is the "rugged" point and shoot category: a camera that's waterproof, shockproof (to absorb falls), and generally tough. Having once dropped an older PowerShot SD700 series camera and watched as the lens bent, I can attest to the fact that Canon Elph cameras, while beautiful to look at, aren't particularly tough. The D10 aims to change that, boasting 33 feet of depth for waterproofing, -10 Celsius/14 Fahrenheit freeze-proofing, and four-foot drop/shock protection. Not bad! 3x optical zoom, 12.1 megapixel sensor, and all the new goodies like blink-detection, face detection, and 18 pre-defined shooting situations round out the offering. Expected to be available in May 2009, the D10 will cost $329.99 USD. Unfortunately it looks like it's only going to be available in that cheesy aquamarine colour, and VGA video capture is where it tops out.
