Build a Better Mouse and the World Will Beat a Path to Your Door

"Picking the best mouse to use is a pretty personal decision—it often comes down to taste and how the mouse feels under your hands, but there are definitely some stand-out models that most of us would recommend to friends if they asked us."

A lot of people are on the tablet craze where they touchy touchy their data, a lot of people still use a mouse as one of their main interface to a computer. A typical computer comes with a mouse that functions, but tends to be very basic. For those that use computers for a living, spending some coin on a more advanced mouse can make a huge difference in productivity and comfort. While the list LifeHacker provides tends to be more gaming focused, many of them function very well as desktop mice, and with extra buttons, it can make things like web surfing much easier. I am partial to the MX Revolution myself, but preference is very personal.

What surprises me is that Microsoft is missing from this list. I am a staunch Logitech fan, using their hardware for most peripherals I have, I must admit that Microsoft also puts out some very good mice and keyboards. What works best for you if you want to upgrade? Go to a brick and mortar store and see how each fits your hand. Reviews are great, but we are talking about a device that you are likely to spend years with.

Project Fiona is PC Gaming in Your Hand

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 03:00 PM

"Project Fiona is a proof-of-concept and a prototype in the most serious way. What you're looking at is version 0.2. (Razer's already finished work on five more iterations of Fiona—they're up to version 0.8 at their labs, and expecting to hit 1.0 by the end of the year.) I can tell when I feel the heat coming out of the vents, as the fan spins up to cool the Intel Core i7 breathing fire inside. Or when the right analog stick feels a little sticky."

Razer is known for its gaming peripherals and it looks like they want to take it one step further with making PC gaming really mobile. Why stick with peripherals when you can offer a whole gaming system? While Project Fiona looks like an interesting concept, I am not sure why I wouldn't favour something like the PlayStation Vita, or a Nintendo DS. If it is PC gaming that I want, which I can understand, then a laptop with a mouse and keyboard, or even a controller, seems like a better option. I think I could live with the limitation that I would have to set myself down somewhere to hook everything up. Anyone see any potential in Razer's latest headline grabber?

And the Mouse Came Back, the Very Next Day

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 10:00 AM

"Many tech pundits have already started drafting an obituary of the computer mouse like the one above, but let's be clear: we think the death of the mouse is greatly exaggerated. In fact, we're so convinced the mouse isn't dead that we've been testing some of the best on the market for the last couple of months. Click on below to find out why we think the lowly mouse has more than a few good years left, and which ones out there deserve your attention."

I do not know if the mouse will ever fully go away, but I can certainly see other user interfaces eating away at its marketshare. Yes, I am thinking of touch, but I also believe that voice recognition, while still very clunky, can also play a role in our future in interacting with technology. Mice are a fact of life in computing today, and the classic mouse + keyboard combination is difficult to beat for a lot of productivity work. As for mice, well, I am a Logitech man. Always have been and always will be. The basic shape they use works well with me, and I have yet to find anything that works as smoothly for me as their MX series. Anyone have a favourite mouse that they are still clinging on to and hoping it will never fail?

PC Gaming on the Move

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 10:00 AM

"Razer is working with a company called Sixense to create a motion controller that works on a principle of magnetic interference instead of accelerometers or cameras, creating a true 1:1 relation between what you do in real life and what appears on the screen."

Well, it looks nice in concept. It looks really nice. However, like many PC gaming peripherals, I do not think it will take off much at all, and no, I am not talking about the death of PC gaming. The problem is the chicken and the egg, much like what you find with what is going on with physics acceleration right now. Since a neat peripheral like this does not come standard on PCs, game publishers will be antsy about spending developer dollars on integrating it into a game, let alone make a game that is based on a motion controller. Any integration will likely be a limited, token effort funded by Razer and Sixense themselves. And of course, gamers will probably not spend any money, especially in these days, on a device that will only really work with half a dozen games. At least physics acceleration got a shot in the arm with Video card companies adopting them. I cannot see something like this taking off. Still, it looks really fun to watch!
