Hauppauge Offers Windows Media Center Some Love

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 09:00 AM

"If you're thinking about going the Media Center DVR route but can't or won't get hooked up with a CableCARD don't forget there's another option available to pull in those premium channels now that the $199 Hauppauge HD PVR is supported as a TV recorder in Windows 7."

For those of you that are not familiar with the Hauppauge HD PVR, it is an external video capture device that interacts with your Cable or Satellite box. The difference between the HD PVR and most other external video capture devices is that it captures in HD (720p, 1080i) where others typically handle SD. This includes channels normally protected by your cable or satellite provider. Support in Windows 7 is great since Windows Media Center is really friendly and easy to use, and being able to record shows in HD will make your life just a little less blurry. While many speculate that the future is in digital distribution, cable or satellite will probably be the video distribution platform of choice for many years to come, so it is nice to see that technology is keeping up so we can enjoy it better!

Record All Your TV With the Hauppauge HD-PVR

"After more than a week with my HD-PVR I can now say that my excitement has not waned. This thing brings all the channels: HD, digital, SD – everything to the HTPC user without needing to worry about CableCard, broadcast flags or other DRM issues. I’m still working out the final details for my complete review of the device, but had a few points I wanted to mention to the readers on the HD-PVR. I just watched the movie: “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” this week so bear with me as I follow that theme…"

Those of you with media centers should be well aware of the ugly problems that DRM can cause. From incorrectly set broadcast flags preventing you from saving your favourite TV show to problems with CableCard, DRM and related technologies make it difficult for those who want to benefit from what media center software can offer. GeekTonic has posted a workaround that uses the Hauppauge HD-PVR to circumvent all these problems through use of the analog hole. It works by taking the digital signal, converting it to a purely analog signal, and then re-encoded into a digital format. The process pretty much strips the video of any DRM and with this hack, the apparent loss in quality is minimal, letting you record and enjoy anything from your cable box, satellite tv, etc. without any worries of that ugly message telling you can you can't record, or even worse, finding your recorded tv shows folder empty!

Hauppauge Intros PC HD Video Recorder

Posted by Jeremy Charette in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 06:00 AM

"Hauppauge obviously decided to leave one big surprise until later in the week at CES. Yesterday it introduced an HD video recorder for the PC, known as the HD PVR. It connects to the computer via USB, and records HD TV in real time, converting into the ISO standard H.264 format. The HD PVR can connect to high definition cable TV or satellite TV set top box receivers using standard component cables...it can also create AVCHD recordings (the format used on Blu-ray high definition players). As part of the software applications which will be shipped with Hauppauge's HD encoder, a DVD burning application will be provided which can take AVCHD formatted recordings and burn them onto a conventional DVD disc. These discs can then be played in Blu-ray DVD players. About 2 hours of Blu-ray HD content can be recorded on a 4.7 GB DVD disk."

I like the idea of a PVR device for my computer that works with my cable box, but not if it takes complete control of the box itself. In order to record two different shows at the same time, I'd need two HD PVRs and two cable boxes. That seems like overkill if you ask me. I'll take a TiVo HD instead, thanks. Now that this WILL be good for is capturing video from component video sources such as game consoles or HD DVD/Blu-Ray players for archiving or encoding to H.264. I haven't seen a reasonably priced HD capture device on the market up 'til now.
