Couple Hits Snag Over Splitting Family Photos

Posted by Reid Kistler in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 05:30 PM

http://www.mnfamilylawblog.com/2010...laroids-pronto/

"When M.R. and E.R. decided to call it quits after more than 20 years of marriage, they had no trouble agreeing on how to split the marital home or how to handle custody of their children. But when it came to figuring out how to divide more than 7,000 photographs, the picture got blurrier."

Jake Ludington (Mediablab.com) sent along a link to the above story (which, in turn, draws from an article taken from the New York Law Journel), and, at first, my thought was "Gee, that is sad - but how does this story apply to 'Digital Home Thoughts?'" Of course, upon reflection, the situation presented poses several questions to ponder for those of us with an interest in photography, and particularly those who are also either married or in some other long-term relationship: 1) How difficult would it be for you to part with a significant portion of the photographic prints you have taken over the years? 2) If asked for advice, what method(s) would you recommend for duplicating photographic prints, notably Polaroids or other prints that lack negatives? And, 3) Given the rise of digital cameras, is this scenario one that is only likely to happen with people above a certain age (and what would that age be, approximately?), or has the recent increase in popularity of "instant prints" resulted in more hard copy only prints?

A Good Lesson in Burning DVDs: Quality Check Before Duplication

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 06:00 PM

I just finished making three DVDs using Nero Vision , and after burning the third one I thought "I guess I should make sure they turned out ok before I give them away". I didn't expect to have any problems, because the three source WMV files were perfect. Imagine my surprise when I tested the first DVD with Nero Showtime and discovered that the audio drops out after the first 90 seconds. I tested the DVD again inside Windows Media Player, and the results were the same. GAH! I hate it when software fails to produce the results it's supposed to - Nero Vision gave me no indication of a problem with the transcoding, the preview was perfect, and all three burns completed without error. And, yes, I checked two of the three discs and the problem was the same on both. I'm now re-doing the project with Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0...and if that doesn't work, I swear I'll switch to Sony Vegas right away!
