DigitalRev Goes Hands-On with the Nikon D7000

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 05:00 AM

"The D7000 has finally landed and our presenter, Kai W, has been fondling the camera lovingly. So, what's new about this successor to the D90? We've all seen the specs sheet, and it looks pretty good even when compared to the D300S and other such cameras like the Canon 7D and Pentax K-5. But what is it really like to use? Find out in this review."

Kai is in fine form in this video; you can tell he's a fan of Nikon cameras, and has been waiting for the D7000. It's a seriously nice camera - I'm slightly tempted myself because this eclipses my D300 in several ways, but I'm waiting for the D300 successor...because if you look at what the D7000 brings to the table, you just know that Nikon is really going to bring the heat with the D300 replacement!

DigitalRev Looks at the Nikon D3100

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 03:00 PM

The ever-friendly Kai looks at the Nikon D3100, considered by some - including me - to be one of the top entry-level DSLRs on the market today. I discovered a rude surprise today though: Nikon changed their raw format with this camera, so Adobe Lightroom 3.2 can't import the raw files. I sure hope Adobe releases an update for Lightroom soon!

Nikon D70 vs Canon 400D Destruction/Durability Test

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1tTBncIsm8

"People always question how tough the more basic level DSLRs are and treat them like delicate objects. But are they really tough enough to take the abuse that one might give it during daily life? Does a magnesium alloy body mean everything when it comes to "tough bodies"? We take these two DSLRs and put them through some extreme tests that you might possibly be able to relate to during your daily lives. Watch the video to see if they survive these rigorous tests."

How do you guys feel about working technology getting destroyed for entertainment purposes? Based on the number of people giving this video a thumbs down on YouTube, I suspect more than a few of you will dislike seeing these cameras getting beat up...still, this is an entertaining video!

DigitalRev Lens Image Stabilisation Video Test

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 02:30 PM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-ARFgNCeAo

"Recently, we got a letter from some guy asking us whether Image Stabilisation on a lens really improves the stability of the movies that he wants to make. What's more, he plans to put his HDSLR on the front of his car, so he wants to know how it will perform when used with a reasonably fast moving object. As we don't like to come up with simple "yes" or "no" answers, we've devised a rather not so simple test. Watch the video to find out what happens."

In a delightfully amusing non-scientific test, DigitalRev's Kai races around and around with two different cameras to see how big of a difference image stabilization makes. The results aren't that surprising - massive vibration courtesy of running running around with a camera on a dolly is something that no image stabilization can fully compensate for.

DigitalRev DIY "Stealth" Street Camera

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLUWtM0aP6I

"We challenge Kai to make a stealthy street camera from scratch. Kind of. With a minimal budget and fingers permanently coated with butter, he gets to work on making a camera perfect for candid street photography. But what will happen? Will it end up in a shade of Magenta? Or will he get electrocuted again? Find out in this video."

Some of the funniest DigitalRev videos are when Kai gets a "special task" to perform - because the guy tries his best, but his DIY skills are, well, somewhat lacking. Not that I could do any better mind you - I wouldn't attempt half of the stuff that he has. This video gave me a good laugh, but amazingly, he ends up with a camera that actually works - he'd just better hope that no one takes a very close look at it...watch the video and you'll see what I mean.

DigitalRev Sony NEX-5 First Impressions

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 03:30 PM

I always enjoy the DigitalRev reviews - that Kai guy is pretty funny - and the hands-on video with the Sony NEX-5 gives you a good overview of what this camera offers. Maybe there's a full review coming up, but it would have been nice if they covered the low-light performance of the NEX-5 versus the Panasonic GF1. In a nutshell, the NEX-5 is a good upgrade for someone who's looking for a higher performing compact, but if you're more into the whole "photography" thing, the GF1 comes out on top.
