Digital Photography Review's Camera Search Finds Your Perfect Camera

Posted by Lee Yuan Sheng in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.dpreview.com/products/search/cameras

"Our new camera feature search is the perfect way to find the digital cameras that best suit your specific requirements. Start your search by clicking on one or more of the basic body type icons. You can then narrow down your selection by adding search criteria from the pop-up menu."

I missed this when it was announced, and DPReview.com has it tucked away under a sub-menu option, but this is a powerful tool if you have a rough idea of what you want but have no idea what is in the market. So if you are shopping for a new camera, take a look at this tool!

New MyPublisher Printing Options Added to My Giant Photo Book Review

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.digitalhomethoughts.com/...ow/97676/8/1/15

A few days ago I updated my photo book review with two new books from MyPublisher. The first is the baby book done with a photowrap cover instead of the dust jacket they offered when I first did this review. The second is a vacation photo book I did with their new lay-flat pages and "super gloss paper" option. The photowrap cover put MyPublisher on the same footing as the other book makers in terms of the overall offering, but combined with the very high quality of MyPublisher's paper and print output, puts them near the top of the pack. The super gloss paper option puts them over the moon though - you have to see it to believe it, so check out my video.

Nine USB 3.0 Flash Drives Compared

Posted by Richard Chao in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 08:18 PM

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews...drive,2900.html

"We found wildly disparate transfer rates ranging from 200 MB/s down to a snail's pace. At the end, though, two products rose to the top of our list."

Just like USB 2.0 flash drives, USB 3.0 flash drives can vary significantly from model to model. If you are looking to pick up one of the new USB 3.0 flash drives, you can test and try the various models to see which is the best suited for you in terms of storage space, price and performance by yourself. Or you can take a look at this comparison done by Tom's Hardware of some of the more popular models currently available.

Nikon D7000 vs. Canon 7D: FIGHT!

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 08:00 PM

http://www.digitalrev.com/en/nikon-...97-article.html

"So, we reviewed the Nikon D7000 just a few days ago and we liked it a lot. With the upgrades, it really has been upped a class, what with the 100% viewfinder, 6fps continuous burst, metal body, as well as 1080p video recording. So, it's only natural that lots of people have been asking us - Canon 7D vs Nikon D7000: which one is better? Well, we take a look in this video by taking photos of a model named Kinki cleaning a BMW."

What I find interesting about this match up isn't that Kai ended up choosing the Canon 7D as the better overall camera; it's that not once in the video does he bother to mention that the Nikon D7000 is about 25% less expensive. Some people, myself included, feel that the D7000 matches up against the Canon 60D, though the 60D is a couple of hundred dollars cheaper. Anyway, it's an interesting review - especially the high ISO performance, where the Nikon D7000 takes the crown.

iLife '11 or Windows Live Essentials, Which is Better?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 04:59 AM

http://lifehacker.com/5673681/

"High-powered hardware and slick looks are nice, but computers should actually make things. Apple and Microsoft both offer software to organize photos, make movies, and enjoy your computer. We compared iLife and Windows Live Essentials head-to-head from a first-time home user's perspective."

Both Microsoft and Apple want you to go digital, and that is the goal of these two packages. iLife '11 comes with every new Mac (or you can upgrade for $49.00 USD), while Microsoft has chosen to make their Live Essentials a free download, mainly to streamline Windows 7 and make it "leaner and meaner." You can also get pieces of Live Essentials versus iLife '11, which comes as an entire package. You can't make a full comparison of these two offerings, since they only have two areas (photo and video handling) in which they compete, but this is a nice article showing exactly what you get with each software suite and the unique programs each has that you can't get anywhere else. The big thing for Microsoft, according to the author, is making it known to it's users that Live Essentials is out there, and it's free. Anyone that uses a Mac has heard of iLife '11 but Windows users may or may not know about what Microsoft is offering them.

Canon 5D Mark II vs Canon 7D Field Test Hands-on Review

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3-f...eos=gbHPe1GsfoU

"In this video, we take a look at two Canon DSLRs - the 7D and the 5D Mark II. If you've got either one of the triple digit-D or double digit-D DSLRs from Canon, which of the two makes the ideal body to upgrade to? We take them out to compare some of the best bits of each camera...but the weather takes a turn for the worst. Find out to see if these cameras survive the Hong Kong Typhoons."

The Canon 7D is an impressive piece of technology, and offers significant value for the dollar. If I were a Canon shooter instead of a Nikon shooter, I guarantee I'd have the 7D. This video offers some interesting comparisons between the two models. Well worth watching!

Nikon D3S vs. Canon EOS 1D Mark IV: FIGHT!

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 06:00 PM

What's funny about this video - and it's not the ham-handed joke at the beginning - is that it's highly unlikely that a first-time DSLR buyer would pick one of these up. More likely is that pros or semi-pros with lots of money already invested in a lens system would pick a model from their brand of DSLR. Still, it's fun to compare each model and see where each one shines - Nikon really trumps Canon now in low-light shooting in terms of noise, but Canon has a clear lead in the realm of video while Nikon sputters along at 720p 24fps video.

Tom's Hardware Compares Four Quad-Core Architectures At 2.8 GHz

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews...e-cpu,2499.html

"AMD and Intel are relentless when it comes to diversifying their respective CPU portfolios across every possible corner of the processor market where someone might want to spend money. The good news is that these efforts give us lots of technology options across the entire price spectrum. But buyers who don't follow the daily cadence of processor development couldn't possibly know whether Core i7 or Core 2 Quad is the newer product, or how these compare to AMD's own line of obscurely-named models. In some ways, it doesn't matter which chips were launched most-recently. The more important consideration might be which processor offers the best total performance relative to its peers, and one of the best ways to judge this is with a shoot-out at a given clock rate."

If you're up to date on the performance merits of each major CPU type, this article won't be a shocker - but if you're not a hardcore CPU geek and are curious about where each of the major chips from Intel and AMD rank in relation to each other, this article is worth a read. I won't spoil the results for you, but it boils down to this: if performance matters to you more than money, buy an Intel chip. If the reverse is true, buy an AMD chip.

Compare Cameras Side by Side at Snapsort

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 08:35 AM

http://www.snapsort.com

Want to compare camera specs side by side? Check out Snapsort - a fast, easy-to-use way of comparing cameras specifications. It not only gives you the numbers, but tells you what they mean - for instance, when comparing the Panasonic GF-1 to the Panasonic DMC-ZS3 (not really a fair fight) it tells the user that a CMOS sensor tends to perform better than a CCD sensor. Slick! What's missing though from my perspective is the sensor size comparison and corresponding millions of pixels per square CM - that's just as important, if not more important, than megapixels. Still, it's worth checking out if you want to see how two cameras stack up.

Featured Product

The Canon PowerShot S100 - The incredibly fun and small camera that offers you 12.1 megapixels with a bright f/2.0 lens and full 1080p video recording . MORE INFO
