Samsung's Smart Window

Posted by Richard Chao in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 12:28 PM

"Samsung's Transparent Window got a lot of attention at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Watch this video to find out why!"

Samsung's Smart Window is a pretty cool concept that looks to replace traditional windows with a transparent display. It gives a glimpse into the future where many surfaces are touchable displays. It's definitely a cool concept with lots of potential.

R10000G Wireless Router By Amped Wireless

Posted by Richard Chao in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 12:30 AM

http://ces.cnet.com/8301-33368_1-57...wi-fi-coverage/

"LAS VEGAS--Most of us live in an apartment of about 1,000 square feet or less; Amped Wireless says it new router can cover an area 10 times larger."

Amped Wireless claims it's R10000G wireless router will be able to provide up to 10,000 square feet of wi-fi coverage. This incredible coverage is accomplished by dual high-power 600mW amplifiers compared to the typical 50 mW found in most wireless routers. Like most other wireless routers, the R10000G also has a set of wired ports should you decide you want a hard line to the router.

The R10000G is scheduled for release later this month and should retail for $150.00.

PMA/CliQ 2011 Cancelled; Moves to CES 2012

Posted by Lee Yuan Sheng in "Digital Home News" @ 05:00 PM

http://www.dealerscope.com/article/...2012-25017480/1

"The rumors that flew around cyber-space all day Wednesday are true – the 2011 PMA, recently renamed and re-positioned as CliQ, has been moved from it’s early September, 2011 dates (6-11) to Jan. 10-13 at the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas, running concurrent with the 2012 International CES."

The PMA trade show is the photography industry's biggest trade show, along with the biannual Photokina. It has been a place where many new camera announcements were made (for example, the Nikon D70 was formally announced at PMA 2004), but it looks like the tsunami in Japan has caused major players like Nikon and Canon to pull out of the 2011 event, and I would not be surprised to see that part of the reason is in the commoditisation of consumer digital cameras. Still, PMA has always been an annual event through its long history, including the film days (yes, you know, before digital cameras came along). I am a little sad to see it get folded into CES, a show that is more consumer than photographer focused. Expect camera announcements to be scattered in September and October as a result.

The Critical Role of a Lightweight Gear Bag at CES

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Articles & Resources" @ 12:38 PM

http://gigaom.com/mobile/ces-gear-bag/

"In what's become an annual tradition for six years now, here's a quick look at the gear I'm taking to cover the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Last year, I did a video walkthough of the gear, but I'm already at Philadelphia International Airport, so a short post will have to do. This time around, my gear is more minimal than ever - even less than in 2008 when I worked the show with an ASUS Eee PC 701 netbook! Several of the gadgets with me are among my favorites from the last year; here's the list of what I'm carrying and why."

Travelling light for CES is indeed a core part of how to not kill yourself when covering the show; Kevin Tofel has a list of what he's carrying with him, and it's indeed a light-weight gear bag: 13" Macbook Air, Canon S95, Google Nexus One, and a Joby Gorillapod. I'm trying to travel light myself, but I'll be carrying a bit more gear: my Dell Vostro V13, my Panasonic GF-1, a Joby Gorillapod, my Canon HF-100 with a shotgun microphone, my LG Quantum phone, and a monopod that can transform into a tripod. Shooting high-quality video with decent audio is extremely important to me, so that's why I'm bringing a dedicated video camera. I'll be packing it in a Skooba Design bag of course - and I'll be carrying other odds and ends. I try to put some of the heavier stuff in my suitcase and only walk the show floor with what I need, no more.

When you travel, what does your gear bag look like?

Engadget Shows Off The Embarassing Side of CES

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 10:30 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/12/...t-of-the-worst/

"We didn't notice nearly as much crap at CES 2009 as we did last year, but what we did see was pretty stunning in its mediocrity -- and then there was the amazing Dragon gamepad, which in our opinion was single best product of the show. Pick your favorite of the contenders below, then hit your local dollar store to see 'em in person."

Every year at CES, manufacturers come out of the woodwork to peddle their wares. While some gadgets are quite useful, or tempting; some raise the question what people were thinking when they designed that. Engadget has generously produced a list of their top ten most questionable products to grace the CES this year. Among them are a remotely controled cooler, a kinetic energy charger and an Elvis karaoke microphone! Of those that they list, my favourite has to be the furry phone pictured above. It's the perfect blend of kitchy and style. The faux rotary dialpad gives it a sense of nostalgia, while the handset looks so rich, covered with what I assume are fake swarovski crystals. If you're looking for that gift for someone who has everything, or just need a talking piece for your living room, this is the item to get! Anyone agree, or has something else caught your keen consumer sense?

Microsoft at CES 2009: Keynote Highlights

Posted by Darius Wey in "Digital Home Events" @ 03:45 AM

After a few minutes of beatboxing and a seemingly enthusiastic Gary Shapiro introducing Steve Ballmer on to the stage, Microsoft's keynote was under way. This was Ballmer's first keynote at CES since taking over from Bill Gates, who delivered it for the first time almost 15 years ago and has traditionally done so up until last year. The question on everyone's mind was whether this keynote would be as memorable as the last. In a time when the very word, "recession", strikes fear into both consumers and businesses, would Microsoft have enough up its sleeve to turn 2009 into a year of ambition, innovation, and prosperity?

CES 2008: Bill Gates' Keynote

Posted by Darius Wey in "Digital Home Talk" @ 01:38 AM

Prior to this keynote, Bill Gates had presented at CES eleven times. Ten of those were keynotes and eight were given consecutively. This year's was to be his last while in his full-time role at Microsoft. Gates looked back at his first keynote in 1994 - he recalled it with great significance as it was a time when Windows 95 was coming together and the Internet was starting to boom. He spoke of the years following as the first digital decade. A period when the world saw one billion PCs populate homes and businesses around the world, 250 million broadband subscribers, and a growth in mobile phone adoption to 41% of the world's population in 2006. There was a heavy emphasis on the digitalization of audio and visual and how it all came down to software. Software-driven entertainment and connected services were very much the focus of his keynote and what he believed would drive the second digital decade.
