A Slate For Every Taste

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Laptop Thoughts News" @ 10:30 AM

http://gizmodo.com/5630935/five-of-...revealed-so-far

"Last week alone saw ViewSonic, Toshiba and Samsung all officially unveil new models of keyboard-less computer, with a mish-mash of operating systems and screen sizes hoping to somehow build themselves a market in the wake of Apple's market-leading device. So here's a summary of five of the best tablets out there and on the way this year. Or, to put it another way, the iPad +4."

Is the slate tablet market really that hot, or is this simply a whole bunch of hype intended to get everyone to open their wallets? Tablets might be the next step in casual computing and thankfully, it seems like it draws a large part of its inspiration from smartphones. The only one that stands out for me, and not in a good way, is the ViewPad 100. Dual-booting just seems like such a hassle and it is not like dual-booting slate tablets have not been tried before. Just ask HTC. Most likely, the iPad will continue to dominate the space though there will be a large amount of Android devices to pick from.

ViewSonic Announces New Portable MovieBook Players

Posted by Reid Kistler in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 07:00 AM

"Consumers want limitless access to all their preferred media," said Jeff Volpe, vice president and general manager of ViewSonic Americas. "Our MovieBook products are the ideal portable entertainment solution. From Full HD 1080p performance to HDMI connectivity and touch technology in a variety of sizes, ViewSonic is offering our customers a fun, easy to use way to mobilize their digital content experience."

ViewSonic's press release promises "Touch-Enabled Enjoyment of Full HD 1080p Digital Content," but the screen specification for the top of the line VPD550T, pictured above, is a 5" 800x480 LCD touchscreen, which suggests that 1080p content will require an external screen, connected via the included HDMI port. The other three new models offer 720p output, with either reduced screen size, lower screen resolution, or both. Pricing ranges from $199.99 to $139.99. Viewsonic's CES page shows three of the announced models, with an interesting feature range, but with no mention of wireless connectivity. Would you be tempted by a MovieBook, or is WiFi a requirement for such devices now?

Viewsonic is Worth A Thousand Picture Frames

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.marketwire.com/press-rel...rp-1098505.html

"ViewSonic® Corp., a leading global provider of visual display, computing and digital content solutions, today added seven new multimedia enhanced digital photo frames in a range of sizes that bring plug and play ease and style to any environment."

Holy jpegs, Viewsonic! I know that digital picture frames are becoming hot (especially now that their prices are dropping) but seven new picture frames? Way to create customer confusion. Going over the various models, most are similar in features and functionality, but it looks like there isn't a scale where it goes from "economy model" to "money is no object". Picture frames are fun, and they are also getting more sensible features like playback of audio and video, but I really wonder who Viewsonic is trying to target here. Most people will just want one frame that does it all for a reasonable price! Now if they can only start offering picture frames that come close to matching the extreme resolutions our digicams offer.
