Engadget Watch Toy Story 3 In 4K 3D

Posted by Andy Dixon in "Digital Home Talk" @ 07:00 AM

"We'll be straight with you, the Engadget staff is somewhat ambivalent about 3D: some of us believe it to be a gimmick, while others see it as a legitimate advance in film technology that takes our movie enjoyment up to its next logical station. What you won't find us disagreeing on, however, is that everything looks better when it's taken to a 4K resolution. Sony has been busy rolling out its new 4K projectors across the US and Europe, and invited us yesterday to see Toy Story 3 in some ultra-advanced 4K 3D. Because of it having four times the resolution of the more conventional 2K stuff -- which Avatar, the big 3D (and 4D) flagship, was delivered in -- Sony's projector is able to deliver both the left- and right-eye frame on the screen at the same time, rather than having to alternate them in hummingbird fashion."

Engadget have managed to see Toy Story 3 on the new 4K Sony projectors that they are rolling out around the US and Europe currently. These projectors are twice the resolution that Avatar was delivered in when it was released, so what was their opinon of this? Does twice the resolution make the film look better? Apparently it does. Take a look at the review and see what their thoughts are.

Artifical Resolution Requirements = Headaches

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 07:00 AM

The screenshot above is from my attempt to install the HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP on my HP Mini 1000 running Windows 7. This is an issue I've written about before, but it continues to give me headaches. Why exactly does a printer driverrequire a screen resolution of 1024 x 768? There's no good reason for it, but because HP hard-coded their installer to require this minimum resolution, it's virtually impossible for any netbook owner to get it installed. I managed to get it installed on one of my other netbooks that had 1024 x 600 resolution, but that was only after spending some time fiddling with the compatibility settings. When are the developers who code this stuff going to get on board with the popularity of netbooks? The train has left the station, and it's all aboard for netbooks - companies making drivers and software need to keep this in mind.
