Photodex Release ProShow 5 Gold and Producer

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Software" @ 09:15 PM

http://www.photodex.com/

"Photodex today announced version 5 of its award-winning ProShow Gold and ProShow Producer products. ProShow is an intuitive software tool that lets people easily mix photos, video clips and music together into polished video slideshows. The release of version 5 includes more than 300 updates as well as some major new features designed to improve the user interface and add unprecedented effects to users' slideshows.

The redesigned user interface (UI) brings extensive changes with larger, easier to view previews and work areas, improved slide editing workflow, improved keyframing, a new effects manager and new UI workspaces with unique program views. All of these updates enable users to see their work in greater detail and provide a new centralized layout for greater efficiency."

I'm a huge fan of Photodex's slideshow creation software, and with version 5.0 it looks like they've addressed some of the limitations v4 had and added some excellent new features. The video above walks through some of the most important ones; I'm personally most excited by the GPU acceleration for playback (I wonder if it's for encoding as well?) and the UI updates in the wizard and the new effects manager. They were both a little clunky before and I'm liking what I'm seeing in the new version.

If you're the kind of person who enjoys sharing your photos with others in slideshow format, trust me, this is a trial download you should take advantage of.

Photodex Releases Uber-Awesome Vintage StylePack for ProShow Gold, ProShow Producer

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Software" @ 03:36 PM

http://www.photodex.com/products/styles/vintage

"Vintage offers 25 vintage-inspired layouts and photographic effects that bring back the look and feel of the past and are designed to complement an array of slideshows from family history and heritage shows to memorial and tribute shows. They're the perfect way to set the mood for telling stories of yesterday, or for giving modern-day digital images a cool analog look."

If you're into photography, and sharing your photos with other people, there's no other software package that I've ever seen like Photodex's ProShow Gold and ProShow Producer. One of the things that makes these tools so powerful is the ability to add on StylePacks - software that gives you a great start in the creative process...or allows you to click and go if you're in a hurry. They're affordably priced as well - this one is only $19.95. Watching both previews above, this is one of the more interesting StylePacks that Photodex has released. It's really clever and when paired with the right sort of images, you'll be able to make some extremely impressive photo slide shows.

Animoto to Finally Offer HD Videos Come Next Week?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 10:30 AM

Former Windows Phone Thoughts editor Jonathon Watkins, now a full-time professional photographer in the UK, attended the SWPP (Society of Wedding & Portrait Photographers) conference in London a few days ago and had a chat with folks at the Animoto stand. He mentioned he was hoping for the service to upgrade to HD and was surprised when he was told that would happen on the 25th of January. The service will be 720p and initially only the Animoto Original video style will be HD enabled. The Pro styles will be upgraded next followed by all the other styles in due course. Animoto have also tweaked their server farm so the renders will now run 10x faster. There is no plan to charge extra for the service according to Watkins.

I've written about Animoto before, and way back in 2008 I was scratching my head over how they could possibly charge $5 for a standard definition video and offer no HD options at all. Now, almost three years later, they're finally offering HD video, and their pricing is $5/month or $30/year - but the video only 720p. That's good, but why not 1080p? Will they offer 1080p when we're all using quad HD TV sets? I've never signed up for an Animoto account because without HD output, there's no point, and while 720p is dramatically better than 480p, I'm still puzzled by Animoto's refusal to offer 1080p video to people who are paying for their service. This does mean, however, that Animoto will have something that ProShow Web doesn't offer for $30/month...HD video output. I was disappointed when Photodex launched ProShow Web with the same SD video limitation that Animoto has rather than one-upping them and having a real advantage to using their service. Worth noting is that ProShow Web's professional-grade service ($150/year) offers 1080p output.

I personally think most people would be better off spending $69.95 once and buy Photodex's ProShow Gold - you can output to 1080p that way, and have great control over your projects. And with the new project wizard, you can get amazing results in just a few clicks.

ProShow is Coming as a Web-Based Service

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home News" @ 03:30 PM

http://www.proshowweb.com/

I'm a big fan of ProShow from Photodex, and they're making that very powerful program available as a Web service of some sort; it will be subscription-based, and while there's no detail on pricing, I'd hope it would be competitive with services such as Animoto. Actually, I hope they do better, because while I don't mind Animoto's $30/year personal account fee, I do mind that the videos are DVD resolution - I mean, what's the point of that? If ProShow on the Web outputs 1080p videos and is cost-effective for people to use, it could be a real winner.

Photodex Releases ProShow Producer/Gold 4.5

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Software" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.photodex.com/products/pr...ow/producer/new

"ProShow Producer has never been this powerful or easy to use. Explore over 190 new transition effects like Page Curl, Curved Path and Camera Flash. Enjoy effortless, automated show creation with the new, built-in wizard and show themes. Plus, add a fresh, exciting look to your shows using any of the 170 new built-in slide styles. Download a free trial today."

I'm a big fan of ProShow Gold and ProShow Producer, but have always struggled with some of the more advanced parts of the program - it's a really powerful product, but certain aspects of the user interface are mystifying and I've never put in the grunt work to figure it all out. Well, with version 4.5, part of that problem is solved. They've added a new wizard for project creation that I can only describe as phenomenal: I was amazed at the result that came from an automated process. I tweaked a few things after the fact, but it was so much easier to tweak than to do it all from scratch. The purists out there might consider this cheating, but I say that the end result is what matters most. Check out two sample videos after the break that I've created that illustrate this. I'm always impressed by the creativity the designers at Photodex show when creating these StylePacks - they keep cranking out new designs, and most are entirely unique and not near-duplicates of each other. If you're someone who likes to make photo slideshow, ProShow Gold and ProShow Producer are really worth checking out.

New "Grunge Appeal" StylePack From Photodex for ProShow and ProShow Gold

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Software" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.photodex.com/eid9121/pro...ylepacks/grunge

If making slide shows is something you do - professionally or as a hobby - it's worth checking out ProShow from Photodex. It's my absolute favourite tool for making slide shows, and while it has some minor irritations I keep bugging Photodex about fixing, overall it's a really nicely program that makes beautiful slide shows quite easy to make. One of the great things about Proshow is how it can be expanded with StylePacks - relatively cheap, easy to use styles that will give your slide show a whole new look and feel. Above are two videos of what come with the new Grunge Appeal StylePack ($19.95) - there are some great styles in there!

ProShow ProducerStylePack Volume 3 Released

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Software" @ 03:44 PM

http://www.photodex.com/eid9094/products/styles/v3

"The wait is over! The all-new ProShow StylePack Volume 3 is here and is our most stylish and creative StylePack yet! Created for Producer users, this volume features a diverse collection of 25 high-impact, pre-designed Styles. Slide Styles instantly transform your slides into amazing effects and animations. With just a few clicks you can go from ordinary to extraordinary! Check out the new Styles below and see more online."

These impressive effects are strictly for the professional-grade ProShow Producer ($249 USD), but if you're a photographer making money creating slideshows for your clients, that's a small price to pay to have an impressive tool at your disposal. The fact that these stylepacks are only $19.95 is great - each one is packed with some great effects. I really liked the Chroma Wash and Oscillations effects from the first video - and Sum of the Parts is pretty slick as well! Tilt Matrix on the second video looks great as well.

I used ProShow Producer a couple of weeks ago on a quick project, and the end results were superb - though I'm still irked that I can't select all my images and apply the same slide style to each of them, all at once. Having to click on each image, click to apply the slide style, and then click OK on a dialogue box warning me that I'm changing the slide style is truly tedious when you have to do it 34 times in a row. Still, I've never seen a program so finely tuned for turning photos into video slide shows - it's a truly superb tool.

Proshow Producer Stylepack 2 Released

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Software" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.photodex.com/products/eid9018/styles/v2

"Add a sophisticated and contemporary twist to your shows with the new ProShow StylePack Volume 2. Created for Producer users, this volume features a diverse collection of 25 high-impact, pre-designed Styles."

If photo slideshows are your thing, the software that Photodex makes - ProShow - is pretty much the gold standard on the Windows platform. Photodex has just released StylePack 2 ($19.95 USD) for ProShow Producer, their high-end professional version. I particularly like Juxtapose and Printblend in the video above - both of them are elegant and beautiful when combined with the right images. Old Film Projector would lend itself nicely to some creative presentation. Be sure to check out the second part of this video to see the other effects that are included.

"The ProShow StylePack Volume 1 provides you with dozens of high-quality Slide Styles; 15 for ProShow Gold and 25 for ProShow Producer. Take a look at the samples below to see examples of each Slide Style included in this StylePack."

The video is pretty self-explanatory: this StylePack upgrade to ProShow Gold or ProShow Producer adds a bunch of really slick effects into the mix, sure to spice up any photo slide you create with it. Be sure to check out the list of which effects are available for which product - two of my favourite ones, Silk Screen and Growing Into Focus, are Producer-only effects.
