So I Guess Social Media Isn't a Fad?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Thoughts Media Status Updates" @ 05:00 PM

A quick note for all readers of all sites: since this whole "Social Media" thing isn't going away any time soon, we've decided to modernize our sites a bit by adding both a Twitter "Re-Tweet" button and a Facebook "Like" button to the bottom of every post. If you find one of our stories useful, interesting, and worth sharing with others, please use the buttons. Thanks so much, and let us know if you see any problems. Right now we're using the basic Facebook integration rather than the deeper one that requires more coding work, but it should do the trick for now. And if you're using Twitter, you'll find our Twitter feeds in the upper right-hand corner of each site.

Twitter Blocks New Windows Live Integration

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 03:30 PM

I just received this email from Microsoft a few minutes ago:

Given that this feature just launched with the Wave 4 Windows Live Essentials Beta last week, it's quite curious that two days from now, it will stop working. Sounds like Microsoft and Twitter weren't talking to each other much leading up to this - what I can't figure out is why wouldn't Twitter want this? Twitter feeds get pulled and posted in hundreds of different ways, so why would it be a problem for Microsoft to automatically import them and share them out via Windows Live?

Preview of Windows Live Messenger

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Software" @ 08:31 PM

http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/wi...-messenger.aspx

"We've spent the last few months posting about how we look at the industry, the key customer problems that are top-of-mind for us, and where we think we can improve the lives of our customers. Today in a speech at the Universidade de São Paulo in Brazil, Steve Ballmer is sharing a preview of the new Windows Live Messenger. In this post we want to talk more about our philosophy and approach for this new version. In subsequent posts we'll go into more depth on different aspects of the experience."

Talk about a major re-design! I wonder though, is it too little too late? I don't log into Messenger as much as I used to - I find that I fire up TweetDeck 10x more often than Messenger. Twitter isn't a complete replacement for IM though - being a public medium, I always keep that in mind when I post messages. If I could fire up one software client and get Twitter, Messenger, and Facebook messages...that would be very useful to me. What about you?

Short URLs Are Great but Clickers Beware!

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 01:30 PM

"Until a remote future arrives when Twitter and the telecommunications industry decide 140-character messages are too short, though, URL-shortening services aren't going to go away. Fortunately, their potential problems can mitigated through careful use, and newer services such as Bit.ly are being designed expressly to avoid the pitfalls. "

I remember when TinyURL came out. At the time, I thought it was a nice idea, but of limited utility. Now, with twitter and input constrained devices exploding in popularity, TinyURL and related services have become much more useful, but something inside my stomach churns when I think about them. http://tinyurl.com/c2elgp just seems to be too cryptic to me. I do not know where it goes and the security angel on my shoulder tells me that blindly going to a site is a bad idea. Fortunately, many services are providing lots of tools and features to their shorteners that help address issues like search engine results, final destination, etc. but those all require extra hassles. That extra layer, especially one that passes through a single company, is enough to make me not click on that link. The one thing I do find interesting though, is that with all these services, as a business, real-time trending becomes possible. Too bad I am not in a business that can take advantage of that.

Internet in Canada a Wasteland

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Digital Home News" @ 09:00 PM

http://www.cbc.ca/searchengine/blog..._digital_g.html

"This growing list of backwards policies is already creating a sense of digital isolation: Canadians can’t stream the videos Americans stream, download the files Americans download, remix the media Americans remix, or tweet the way Americans tweet. With the election of Barack Obama, digital culture in the U.S. hit a tipping point, where a robust online public sphere proved itself capable of changing the world. Meanwhile, here in Canada we’re approaching our own tipping point, where a series of ignorances and capitulations threaten to turn our country into a digital ghetto."

Living in Canada, the digital climate has a direct impact on me and my concerns echo a lot of what Jesse Brown has posted. Internet access, both wired and wireless, in Canada is relatively expensive and slower than our friends south of the border. This in combintion with a growing effort on DRM restrictions makes Canada a less inviting atmosphere for innovation. One case in point mentioned in the article is Twitter recently shutting down outbound SMS messages in Canada. Canadians, well, anyone, needs to make an effort to make sure that their country strives to keep its Internet access as cheap and open as possible. With the impact that a pervasive Internet can have on our lives, it's worth that effort.
