31 Days of the Dragon: We're Giving Away an HP Pavlion HDX9200 Notebook PC + Software + DVDs ($5500 Value)

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 09:23 PM

***THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED, THE WINNER HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED HERE.***

The time has finally arrived (yeah, sorry for being a bit late): we're launching our 31 Days of the Dragon giveaway contest today. All the details about what's in the giveaway bundle can be found here, but the short version is that it's a pimped out-to-the-max HDX9200 notebook PC worth about $5000 if purchased at retail. The laptop features an Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 CPU (2.8 Ghz), 500 GB of storage (2 x 250 GB hard drives), 4 GB of RAM, integrated HDTV tuner, fingerprint reader, nVidia GeForce 8800M GS with 512 MB of RAM, a 20.1 inch WUXGA screen (1080p, 1920 x 1200), and lots more. The software bundle includes Office 2007, three Blu-ray DVDs, and more. I'm reviewing it, but when I'm done (on or around the 17th of May), I'm giving it away to one of YOU.

*** The Official Contest Rules ***
OK, so you want to win this awesome prize bundle. I've been doing more YouTube videos lately, and as such I want to bump up our profile there. You know how YouTube works: the most popular videos and channels got there by first getting some exposure. I'd like you to help me with that! Here's all you need to do:
  1. If you don't already have a YouTube account, create one (it's free and fast). If you have one already, you're golden.
  2. Jump over to the YouTube page where the HDX9200 unboxing and first impressions video is posted. Watch the video, rate it, and post a comment on the YouTube page. Your comment should answer this question: "How will the Dragon rock your world?" Meaning, if you were to win the HDX9200, how would it change things for you? Would it allow you to get rid of your current computer, monitor, keyboard, and speakers? Would you come up with creative uses for a powerful workstation that could be moved - could you finally launch that mobile music recording studio business, be a wedding photographer and edit photos on the spot, or would it allow you to achieve some other goal? Or would you just revel in the sheer power of being able to play games and edit movies faster than ever before? Tell me how you'd use this powerful computer!
  3. After you've posted your comment (only one comment per YouTube account), click on the yellow Subscribe button to subscribe to the Thoughts Media YouTube Channel.
  4. If you want to double your chances of winning, also post your comment here on Digital Home Thoughts as a reply to this post. Please post your YouTube username as well so I can verify that you've subscribed to our YouTube channel and posted a comment there. If this is your first post to Digital Home Thoughts, please allow up to 24 hours for your post to appear.
  5. I'll randomly select one person from the combined total of all the YouTube comments and the comments here. That person will win the laptop. Boom! Anyone in the world can win this laptop, thanks to the generous support of HP and Buzzcorps - it will be couriered to you.
The fine print about how I'm doing the random selection: When I do the random drawing, I'll do it from a combined total of all the YouTube subscribers and all the comments posted here on Digital Home Thoughts. Each YouTube subscriber and each comment posted here on Digital Home Thoughts will be assigned a numerical value, and I'll use random.org to pick a random number from the total. That's why if you post a comment both on YouTube, and here, you'll double your chances of winning. When I select the winner I'll be checking it against the comments, so make sure you fulfil all the contest requirements. If the person that is randomly selected hasn't followed my instructions, another winner will be chosen.

If you have questions about the contest, please don't post them here, only post your contest entries - send me a message with your questions using our contact form and I'll update this post with further details if I've forgotten anything. I hope everyone has fun with this contest!

*** UPDATE: PLEASE READ THIS. *** I just finished approving 65 (!!) new posts for this contest, and over 10 of them were duplicates. ONLY POST ONCE. You will not see your post right away if it's your first post to this site. It's held in moderation, then will be approved and will show up. Post ONCE, then come back in 24 hours and confirm your post is here (it will be). Anyone who has more than one post in this thread will be disqualified.

*** UPDATE #2: PLEASE READ THIS. *** If anyone posts more than once to this contest thread, or to the YouTube comments, they'll be disqualified. I just spent 30 minutes cleaning up more than a dozen posts in this discussion thread from a single user. I appreciate everyone's enthusiasm for this contest, but because each post is an entry, I can't allow more than one entry per person per location (one entry here, one entry over on YouTube). When I randomly select the winner, I'll be searching through all the discussion posts and if that person has posted more than once, they'll be disqualified and I'll pick another winner. That's the only way to keep this contest fair.

And That's a Wrap: Hope You Enjoyed The Contest!

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 03:00 PM

...and we're done. That was one of the biggest contests, I've ever put on for any of my sites: 46 different prizes from13 different companies, totalling just over $7000 USD in prizes. Whew! I hope all of you Digital Home Thoughts readers enjoyed it, and that you'll return here again and again to read our news, reviews, and contribute to our community. One of the challenges in running a site with such a broad focus like this is it can be hard to build a critical mass of community - this contest was a mechanism to get people posting, get them involved in our forums, and get them reading the site. Keep coming back if you like what we do here!

A big thank you goes out to all of the companies that donated awesome prizes to this contest: Microsoft and the Windows Vista Team, Orb Audio, LumaPix, Kingston, HP, Audioengine, Corel, Cyberlink, Pinnacle, Proporta, PPC Techs, Roxio, and NTI.

And you'd think I'd be all done with contests for a bit, but nooooo, it's time to ramp up for the 31 Days of the Dragon giveaway event. Check back later today for the rules on how to enter to win an awesome $5500 prize pack, the centerpiece of which is an HP Pavilion HDX9200.

Because of the server move we had to do last night and this morning, things are a bit back-logged on me getting the 31 Days of the Dragon contest up on Digital Home Thoughts. It will happen today for sure, but it won't kick off until tonight - sorry about that! Watch for it. In the meantime, here's an updated list on some of the contests that are still going on, and some that are ending very soon:

Today I Enter The Dragon: The HDX9200 "Dragon" Has Arrived

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 01:16 PM

That, dear readers, is an HP Pavilion HDX Entertainment Series Notebook PC, also known as the "Dragon". Personally I think that's exactly what they should have called it, but I digress: I just received this unit from a courier this morning, and this is the unit that I'll be giving away to one lucky Digital Home Thoughts reader after I review it (don't worry, I'll take good care of it). Our contest starts in eight days, so stay tuned for more details!

The contests at the other 30 sites involved in this huge event have just started to happen - today AbsoluteVista.com has started their contest, so be sure to stop by and enter to win. Each site is running their contest for seven days, so don't delay - head over to AbsoluteVista.com and see what Mr. John Obeto is asking you to do...

31 Days Of The Dragon: The HP-Sponsored $160,000+ Giveaway

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 09:36 PM

http://www.31daysofthedragon.com/

I can't express how thrilled I am to announce this jaw-dropping contest to Digital Home Thoughts readers: HP has partnered with 31 bloggers (via Buzz Corps) to sponsor a giveaway of 31 of their audacious HP Pavilion HDX Entertainment Notebook PC (a.k.a. the "Dragon"). This laptop is one of the most jaw-dropping pieces of hardware on the market - when you see it in person you can only say "Wow!". It's a beast of a laptop, more of a portable PC than something you'd think of as being a laptop - although I should point out that earlier this month when I was at the Seattle airport I actually saw a traveller with one of these out on a restaurant table!

Retail value? $4500 USD. Multiply that by 31, and you get $139,500 worth of prizes spread amongst 31 different winners. This is 31 day contest where each day one of these prize bundles will be given away. Many of the sites involved, including yours truly, will be receiving the laptop first for review, then polishing it up and shipping it off to the winner. I get to review it, but you get to keep it - good deal, right?

But wait, it gets even better: other partners have gotten involved and the prize package includes a great software and movie bundle (detailed below) that if purchased at retail would cost an additional $696 USD. So each prize bundle has a retail value of $5196. Getting excited yet? Yeah, I thought so! Let's take a closer look at what's being given away, and how you can enter a potential 31 different times across all the sites that are involved. Read more...

Re-Launch Contest #18: Orb Audio MOD1 PLUS Home Theatre Speaker System

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.orbaudio.com/index.asp?P...WPROD&ProdID=50

Here's our 18th giveaway, and one of our grand prize giveaways, courtesy of the generous people at Orb Audio: one MOD1 PLUS Speaker System, valued at $999 USD, will be given away. Right now I'm testing a slightly bigger system of theirs (same speakers, just a few more of them), the Mod2, and words fail me: these speakers sound so incredibly good. Punchy, bright, powerful - just superb. The sub-woofer is tight and shockingly powerful for an 8" sub - hell, for any sub. I've been watching too many movies and enjoying the sound instead of writing my review! Here's a bit about the configuration that they're giving away to one lucky winner:

"The Best $999 Orb Audio Speaker System. The MOD1 PLUS speaker system is our solution for our customers on a tight $1,000 budget. It includes a 5.1 Mod1 system with Mod2 center channel upgrade, our BOSS Mod2 horizontal center speaker stand, 100 feet of speaker wire and a 12 foot subwoofer cable. It has great sound, an upgraded look and all the little things that you forget like speaker wire and a subwoofer cable. You can also choose to configure it as 3 Mod2 speakers if you do not plan on having rear speakers or if you already have them. There are no tricks here...while other systems are $999 BEFORE you add wire, cables and stands, this system is $999 INCLUDING all of that. If you don't need the add-ons, we suggest that you consider our People's Choice Home Theater Speaker System, which upgrades your front left and right speakers to Mod2 for about the same price. If you'd like the add-ons AND the upgraded front speakers (in a medium or large room or if you prefer louder output) that option is available as well. Either way, the MOD1 PLUS system is completely customizable to include 5, 6 or 7 speakers and you may also add any additional audio and video cables you might require for other components, to ensure you don't have to do any last minute shopping when your system arrives."

Here's how to enter: just post a message as a reply telling me about your home theatre setup - whether that's a 14" TV and no surround speakers, or a 72" plasma with an in-wall speaker system. Tell me how the Orb Audio speakers would improve your movie watching enjoyment. There's one post per person allowed, and one winners will be randomly chosen. The contest will stay open for entries until April 7th, 2008. Because of the physical size and weight of this prize, only people in the USA and Canada may enter this contest.

Special thanks to Orb Audio for their donation of this kick-ass speaker system!

This software is truly amazing - I use it to make 16 x 20" photo collages after every major vacation my wife and I go on, and over the past year I've used it to create a wide assortment of projects for friends and family. It's also worth noting that the Extreme version of this software comes with a stunning array of templates and elements for you to use in your layouts.
