Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 04:53 PM

http://www.youtube.com/hp

"HP Friday announced the HP You on You project, a contest on YouTube that invites entrants from around the world to create and share videos that express who they are - without showing their faces. The contest uses new video creation tools on YouTube, including improved video remixing and webcam video tools, to allow people of all skill levels to submit videos that run the gamut from comedies to mini-biographies and documentaries, and showcase their individual passions, causes and creative gifts. Running through Aug. 30, the contest offers the opportunity for contestants to win more than $300,000 in cash and prizes from HP. The contest is an extension of HP's award-winning "The PC Is Personal Again" campaign, which features achievers including Shaun White, Serena Williams and Fergie discussing what they do with their HP PCs in a series of "Hands" commercials that don't show their faces."

Feeling creative? Got a video camera or Web cam? Go for it and win some prizes!

Win a Copy of Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 05:05 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pr...ed/windows.aspx

Thanks to some generous folks at Microsoft, I have a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED Edition to give away (valued at $219 USD). Oh yeah, and that little wireless mouse too. The contest is open to anyone in the world, and all you have to do to enter is post a response in our forums telling me what you'd do with this software. Would you install it on your current computer, currently running Windows XP or a lower version of Vista? Would you donate the software to charity? Would you build a new computer and use this OS? Or give the OS away to someone who doesn't yet have Vista? There are no right or wrong answers, I'm just curious to know what you'd do.

The contest is open until Thursday the 5th of March, 2009, at 3pm GMT -7. One entry per person. I'll randomly select one winner and they'll have 72 hours to respond and claim their prize.

UPDATE: The contest is over and the winner is cmchavez. Thanks to everyone for entering the contest!

Currently Running HP Magic Giveaway Contests

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 04:00 PM

There are still more contests to go, so if you want to enter for a chance to win at other blogs, here's where to go:

And The Winner of the HP Magic Giveaway Contest Is...

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 02:36 PM

I'm tremendously excited to be able to announce the winner of our HP Magic Giveaway contest. The winner is jenni104, who posted the following story in our contest thread:

"I am a single, disabled mom, living on social security only, with two sons about to start college hopefully. I have had to have my neck rebuilt, and my lower back is inoperable at this time, so the disc degeneration is taking it's toll on me. I also have heart problems, fibromyalgia, myofascia, and have developed severe social anxiety due to the illnesses and how I always feel. I used to teach the severely disabled and now I am on my way to being one of them. We also had to move into a two bedroom trailer from a wonderful house with land. My sons have been subjected to a lot due to my problems.

I would dearly love to help out my sons with their college needs; and this would go a long way to help them. We would keep the desk top here at home to share with the printer, and each boy could have a laptop for school and work with programming. I, of course, would let them help in all decisions regarding who gets what. The last laptop I would like to give to my ex husband, who has lost his house and job due to the economy. He did find a factory job at minimal pay, and that one is about to close too. He is currently sleeping on my sofa here until he ever gets back on his feet. But I would like him to be able to keep in touch with the boys online too, and he doesn't have a computer. This could also help him find work too.

The child's software I would love to donate to the children's wing of the hospital for the poor kids there to enjoy, along with whatever else was not going to be used to better the future outlook of my sons. I do not know how else I will ever be able to get technology for my sons college and work needs other than a wonderful contest like this. Thank you for this opportunity."

While my selection of the winning post was random, I was incredibly happy to see what I feel is a very worthy response to this contest. I've contacted jenni104 via email and private forum message, and she has 72 hours to respond and claim her prize.

I want to thank HP and Microsoft for donating these amazing prizes, Buzzcorps for organizing it all, and of course all of you for entering this contest. Remember there are still contests happening right now, so there are more chances to win. I'll post a round up of links to active contests later today. Have fun!

The HP Magic Giveaway: Win $6000 in Hardware and Software, Then Share It

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 09:40 PM

http://www.hp.com/go/magicgiveaway

It's time! I posted my teaser back at the end of November, and it's finally our turn to kick off this amazing contest from HP. As a reminder, here's the list of hardware that the winner will be awarded:

Hardware

HP TouchSmart IQ816 PC

HP HDX 18 series Premium Notebook PC

HP MediaSmart Connect

HP Pavilion dv4 series Entertainment Notebook PC (with Windows Live)

HP Mini 1000 (with XP)

Accessories

HP Photosmart C6380 Wireless AIO (printer)

HP 564 Photo Value Pak [thanks for the PDF Gear Diary!]

Software & Entertainment

• Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate/Home Premium or Microsoft Windows XP pre-installed on all units (Mini 1000 runs XP)

• Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition 2007 (Student-Teacher Edition) - 1 DVD with 3 licenses

• Microsoft Windows Live

Corel VideoStudio X2

Kung Fu Panda (2 widescreen DVDs; 1 widescreen Blu-ray disc)

Here's the important part though: part of this contest is sharing the magic, so this contest is all about you giving away part of what you win. So here's the deal: I'm going to numerically pull one random post here as the winner, but when I review that entry, if it doesn't meet the qualifications, another random entry will be selected. So what are the qualifications? Telling me how you'd share this prize pack, with whom, and why. With this bundle consisting of four computers, three of them laptops, it's really more than one person needs - and in these troubled economic times, there are going to be people around you, charities, schools, etc. that could put some of this hardware and software to good use, right? So if you won this $6000 prize pack, who would you give some of the hardware to, and how would they use it? I'll be looking for a detailed explanation of how you'd share this, but the requirement is only that you give away at least one of the laptops or the desktop computers. As long as you meet the requirement of giving away one of the computers, your entry is valid.

Some other basic rules: only one post per person is allowed, and if you don't see your post appear right away, give it up to 48 hours because if it's your first post, it's probably held in moderation. Anyone in the world can win this contest. All posts have to be submitted by midnight mountain time on the 17th of December. If you're selected as the winner, I'll be contacting you via email and private forum messaging. You'll have 24 hours to respond to claim your prize, or the next person will be selected. No whining allowed. The prizes will be shipped to you directly by HP, so if you're selected as the winner, you should provide me with your shipping address and the shipping address or addresses of the people you're going to share this prize with. If you live in the USA, you will be provided with funds to cover the taxes on this prize bundle. If you have any more questions, please ask them in the original thread.

With that said, bring on the stories of sharing! And remember there are 49 other sites participating in this contest - two new contests launched today, one from SlashGear, and one from OSNN.net.

UPDATE: I've scrubbed the YouTube portion of this contest. The only valid entries are the ones in this thread.

Win 1 of 10 Seagate 1TB FreeAgent Desk + Seagate FreeAgent Go 500GB Drive Bundles

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 05:09 AM

Data loss is brutal to deal with. Regular Digital Home Thoughts readers know that I bring up the issue of data backup regularly, because sadly most people don't take data backups seriously until they've lost something they cared about (I know I was the same way). The folks at Seagate, in conjunction with Notebooks.com and nine other Web sites, would like to give one lucky winner a head start on changing their backup habits by giving them a Seagate FreeAgent Go 500 GB portable drive, and a monstrous 1TB FreeAgent Desk drive. For those of you not so good at the mathematics, that's 1500 GB of storage space, all at blazing USB 2.0 speeds. What's not to love?

Want to win this hard drive prize package? All you have to do is answer the following question: What do you have on your notebook or desktop computer that you'd be devastated if you lost? Have you ever lost important data - what happened? Post your reply in this discussion thread, one comment per person. The winner will be chosen randomly from all the posted comments. Your deadline for submitting your comment is 11:59 PM Pacific Time on December the 6th. The winner will be announced on Monday the 8th.

Interested in increasing your chances of winning? Stop by each of these other nine great sites and enter their contests as well:

UPDATE: ...and the winner of this contest is...Heatwave316! Thanks to everyone for entering - it was great to see 160 entries for this contest, although it was hard to read about some data loss stories - I feel your pain, I know what it's like. For the 159 of you who didn't win, and to everyone else reading this, I'd really encourage you to back up your data if you're not already doing so. An external USB hard drive is a great way to start, but automatic online backups are an even more economical way to back up your data and they have the added protection of being off site - that local hard drive sitting next to your computer? Fire, flood, theft, or any number of other things will take that hard drive out if it takes your computer out. My personal choice for online backups is Mozy [Affiliate], and they just so happen to have a 10% discount coupon this month. The coupon code is DECEMBER. I'm currently backing up just over 180 GB of data with Mozy (yeah, it took a while to upload) and all my restore tests have worked quite well. Give it a try!

The HP Magic Giveaway: $6000 in Hardware & Software to One Winner, Who Will Share It!

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 11:22 AM

http://www.hp.com/go/magicgiveaway

UPDATE: Our contest is now live, post your entry here.

Remember that awesome 31 Days of the Dragon giveaway contest Digital Home Thoughts was a part of earlier this year? Well this new contest from HP that we've been invited to partake in dwarfs that one on a number of levels. First, the prize pack is even bigger: $6000 in total prizes, consisting of one desktop PC, three laptops, a Media Center extender, a printer, and some software and accessories. Whew! There's some awesome hardware here. The scope is bigger too: there are 50 different blogs involved, and they range from tech blogs like this one, to women's blogs, to student blogs, to Spanish and Portuguese blogs. The complete list is further on in this post. If you do the math, that's $300,000 USD in total prizes, thanks to HP and Microsoft's Windows Live team.

The HP Magic Giveaway is designed around the idea of the magic of sharing, so it's not a coincidence that it's happening as we lead up to the Christmas & holiday season. Each blog is running their own type of contest (and you can enter all of them), but the idea that many of us are focusing on is sharing. One person probably doesn't need four computers all to themselves, so when I kick off my contest later on, it will include some sort of prize-sharing element. Start thinking of who and how you'd share this with others. A contest like this is even more timely when you look around at the financial markets world-wide, and even in your neighbourhood. Stay tuned for more details on my contest.

So what's included in this huge giveaway? Here's the full list:

Hardware

HP TouchSmart IQ816 PC

HP HDX 18 series Premium Notebook PC

HP MediaSmart Connect

HP Pavilion dv4 series Entertainment Notebook PC (with Windows Live)

HP Mini 1000 (with XP)

Accessories

HP Photosmart C6380 Wireless AIO (printer)

HP 564 Photo Value Pak [thanks for the PDF Gear Diary!]

Software & Entertainment

• Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate/Home Premium or Microsoft Windows XP pre-installed on all units (Mini 1000 runs XP)

• Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition 2007 (Student-Teacher Edition) – 1 DVD with 3 licenses

• Microsoft Windows Live

Corel VideoStudio X2

Win a Voodoo Envy 133, or One of Three Lenovo IdeaPad S10s

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.notebooks.com/color_survey/

"We're giving away one Voodoo Envy 133 and three IdeaPad S10s in a drawing that kicks off today. Here's you chance to win the world's an Envy 133, which is the world's thinnest notebook. The IdeaPad S10 is Lenovo's entry into the ‘netbook' and one of my favorite affordable notebooks. Earlier this year we gave away an HP HDX worth over $5,000 and it's really exciting to be giving away some more hot notebooks."

The Voodoo Envy 133 is one sexy-looking notebook - when I look to replace my Dell XPS M1330 (probably in late 2009), I'll be looking at the Voodoo Envy line. Xavier from Notebooks.com has a great contest going on where filling out a survey is all you need to do to be eligible for the random drawing. Unfortunately it's limited to residents of the United States only. If one of you win this, just send it up to me, ok? Thanks. ;-)

Win a Copy of ProShow Gold

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.photodex.com/products/proshowgold/

ProShow Gold is a program I've just started using recently, but I really enjoy it - it's like that old Microsoft PhotoStory product from a few years ago, only much better (why does Microsoft always abandon their coolest technologies?). At any rate, the nice folks at Photodex (the makers of ProShow) have given me two copies of ProShow Gold to give away (valued at $69.95 USD each). So guess what that means - contest time!

All you have to do to win is take a look at the list of features, browse through the screen shots, or better yet, download the free demo - and tell me what your favourite feature is, or how you'd use this software. That's it! One post per person in this thread, one entry per person, and the contest will remain open until Thursday, June the 5th at 2 PM (GMT -7). Two winners will be chosen at random, and they'll be notified via our forum private messaging system (so make sure you have your account set to email you when you get a new message). That's it - I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone has to say!

31 Days of the Dragon: And The Winner Is...

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 10:15 PM

http://www.31daysofthedragon.com

I'm thrilled to announce that the winner of the HDX9200 is a YouTube user named XiledSoldier. Although I picked him randomly, I wanted to share his response since it sounds like he'll put the HDX9200 to good use:

"How will the Dragon rock your world?: Well, my current computer is crap. So anything would pretty much rock my world. I want to get into graphic design as a career and what a better way to jump start that than to have a nice powerful laptop to use. I'm a gamer as well and this will let me play games at much better quality than my current rig."

As a recap, he won an HDX9200 notebook PC worth about $5000 if purchased at retail. The laptop features an Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 CPU (2.8 Ghz), 500 GB of storage (2 x 250 GB hard drives), 4 GB of RAM, integrated HDTV tuner, fingerprint reader, nVidia GeForce 8800M GS with 512 MB of RAM, a 20.1 inch WUXGA screen (1080p, 1920 x 1200), and lots more. The software bundle includes Microsoft Office 2007, Corel PaintShop Pro X2, Corel Painter Essentials, Corel Ulead Video Studio Plus 11.5, and Symantec Norton Internet Security. For the gamers in us the winners will receive Viva Piñata, Microsoft Flight Sim, Microsoft Flight Sim Expansion Pack, and Gears of War. Since that Blu-ray drive is no fun without movies, the winner will also receive Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl, Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest, and Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End.

All this, if purchased at retail, would cost around $5500 - and XiledSoldier wins it all, courtesy of HP. I want to thank HP for this incredible contest - it was an amazing amount of fun to give away such a huge prize. Big thanks to Buzzcorps for helping to coordinate everything. At the time I did the drawing, there were 1162 comments posted to my video, 673 comments posted to the discussion thread, and I gained over 1000 new subscribers to the Thoughts Media YouTube Channel.

Thanks again to everyone for participating, and I hope you'll continue to come back to this site for all your digital home news and reviews. And remember, there are still a lot of Dragons to be given away, so be sure to check out all the other sites that are a part of this giveaway.

Our 31 Days of the Dragon Contest Closes Tonight

So if for some odd reason you haven't yet entered your name to win this $5500 retail-value laptop and software bundle, today is your last chance to do it.
