Live in Canada? Enter the Rescue a Dell Mini Contest!

Posted by Reid Kistler in "Digital Home Events" @ 05:30 PM

http://www.facebook.com/DellCanada#...pp_228459022787

"There are 21 compact, go-anywhere Mini 10v red laptops that need rescuing and if you help, you could take one home! Here's how: The contest begins December 18, 2009 at 12:00pm EST and one winner will be randomly selected almost every weekday starting December 21, 2009 after 5pm EST. Visit the Rescue a Mini tab on Dell's Facebook page www.facebook.com/DellCanada.... Didn't win on Facebook? Don't fret! There's a bonus 22nd Mini 10v that needs rescuing on Twitter! To enter, follow Dell on Twitter www.twitter.com/DellHomeSalesCA and @reply Dell @DellHomeSalesCA with the hashtag (#RESCUEAMINI) and tell us why you could #RescueAMini. The @reply winner will be chosen by a panel of Dell judges. Contest closes January 21, 2010 at 5:00pm EST. Visit Rescue a Mini www.dell.ca/rescueamini for a complete list of rules and regulations."

Here's one for all of our Canadian readers! Fortunately, we own a Dell Mini 10v, or else this announcement might have found itself accidentally misplaced out of jealousy. The 10v may not be the technology leader among netbooks, but we have been quite impressed with ours thus far - and "free" covers a lot of faults. If you need more incentive, and a few minutes of entertainment, you can view the video Dell created for this contest at www.youtube.com/rescueamini.

So What's the Weather Like Where You Are Today? Win a Prize!

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Events" @ 09:00 AM

That lovely video below is what I was seeing yesterday morning standing in my garage - as I write this it's gotten even worse. Winter has really arrived in full force where I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Blowing snow, roads being shut down, the whole deal. Since Windows Phone Thoughts and Digital Home Thoughts have a world-wide audience, I'm always interested in knowing what it's like where you live. And since I happen to have some now-legacy micro-lights branded with site names that no longer exist (Pocket PC Thoughts, Smartphone Thoughts, and Digital Media Thoughts) I thought there was a way I could clear up some inventory and have some fun at the same time...because who doesn't like cool little flashlights for free?

So here's the deal: I want you to post a picture of what the weather is like where you are right now. Bright sunny day? Cold and wet? Night time? It doesn't matter what it is, I want you to share your environment with the rest of the community - it's always fascinating to me to see the different sorts of things we experience. I have 25 Pocket PC Thoughts micro lights to give away, 15 Smartphone Thoughts micro lights, and 10 Digital Media Thoughts micro lights. That's 50 total prizes, and they'll be given to the first 50 people who post an image of the weather or environment they're in right now. BONUS: If someone posts a video, I'll also include a spare battery for the micro light (while supplies last - I have five extra batteries, so first come first serve). Read more...

http://store.shure.com/store/shure/...tID.105181400#t

We've got another great contest for you, and this time because it's an accessory that works with so many different products, it's a network-wide contest. The prizes? I'm giving away three pairs of SHURE SE210 Earphones (MSRP $179.99 USD), courtesy of the generous folks at Shure. Our very own David Tucker reviewed this earphones back in September, and he loved them - so I'm sure the three winners will as well. The SE210's feature a noise-isolating sleeves that block 90 percent of the ambient noise, and the more noise you can block out, the more you can enjoy your tunes.

What do you have to do to win? Simply post a message in this discussion thread telling me which type of device (or devices) you'd use the headphones with. A Windows Mobile smartphone? A Zune? An iPod? An iPhone? A netbook or laptop? That's it - one post per person, and the contest closes on Tuesday the 15th of December at 12pm GMT -7. This contest is world-wide; I'll be shipping you the prizes myself.

Remember that all first posts in our system are held in moderation, so if this contest entry is your first post, please wait up to 48 hours before getting concerned if your post hasn't shown up yet - it will. Winners will be contacted via private forum message, so ensure that you have email notifications turned on. Winners will have 72 hours to claim their prize.

Let's see those entries!

UPDATE:The contest is now closed, and the three winners are GqSkrub, webguy248, and deenoo. Thanks to everyone for entering - it was great to see so many entries! And big thanks to SHURE for donating the prizes!

Skooba Design Netbook Messenger Bag Giveaway

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 10:00 AM

Skooba Design is once again giving us the opportunity to give away some of their products - and this time it's their new Netbook Messenger bags ($49.95 USD). These small bags are a great companion to your small netbook, allowing you to travel light. I hate taking my netbook in the same laptop bag I use to carry a 13.3" screen notebook - and it's a laptopbag designed for a 15.4" screen laptop. Small computers deserve small bags, and that's what the Skooba Netbook Messenger bag aims to deliver.

Want to win? All you have to do is tell me what kind of a netbook or notebook you'd put in it (it will hold a netbook up to 10.5" x 7.5" x 1.5" in size), and what colour of bag you'd like. Three of the colours are pictured above, and it's also available in "Abyss Black". I'll be randomly selecting three winners from amongst all the entries.

This contest is open to anyone in the USA or Canada (sorry rest of world, shipping is too expensive on a large product like this). There's one post per person allowed, and the contest will stay open for one week, closing down on Monday the 30th of November at 3pm GMT -7. One entry will be selected randomly. All posts are moderated, so if it's your first post, it might take up to 24 hours for it appear.

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone that entered - it was neat seeing the variety of devices that everyone carries. The three winners, randomly selected, are: Steve Jordan, minikj, and Brad Adrian.

Win One of Two Skooba Sidekick Laptop Bags

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 06:00 AM

I've reviewed a lot of Skooba Design (formerly RoadWired) products over the years, and their latest line of messenger-style bags look great. The Sidekick bag is priced in the realm of your typical found-at-Best-Buy laptop bags ($79.95 USD, on sale right now for $39.95), but I'm willing to bet it's much better than anything you'd find at retail. I haven't looked at one of these yet, so I can't say for sure, but my previous experience with Skooba Design bags tells me I'm probably right. I keep trying other bags, but always go back to my Skooba bags.

Want to win? All you have to do is tell me what you'd like to carry in the bag. Take a look at the photos on the Skooba product page, check out all the pockets and pouches, and post a message telling me what gadgets and gear you'd put into this bag. I'll randomly select two people and each will win one of these bags.

This contest is open to anyone in the USA or Canada (sorry rest of world, shipping is too expensive on a large product like this). There's one post per person allowed, and the contest will stay open for one week, closing down on Wednesday the 11th of November at 3pm GMT -7.

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone for entering! The two winners, randomly chosen, are Dyvim and NeilE. Yes, the same NeilE that won the last contest...but this is what happens when there are so few entries! We've got another Skooba Design contest coming up later this month, so watch for that.

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 02:38 PM

http://www.skoobadesign.com/master/home.html

"Skooba Design has announced a first-ever contest to find and reward the ultimate digital gear-head. The inaugural "Master of the Digital Universe" contest (http://www.skoobadesign.com/master/home.html) invites serious techies to make a case for why they deserve the title. Among other goodies, the grand prize includes something truly unique-the opportunity to work directly with a Skooba designer to create a custom-made, one-of-a-kind laptop/gadget bag, to be handmade by a Skooba craftsperson, only for the winner. As the company says, "as is fitting for the Master, it will be the only bag of its kind in the universe, made to the winner's wants, needs and specifications. Once it is made, there will never be another." The grand prize winner will get other merchandise and gadget gift card prizes as well, and may be featured in Skooba advertising and promotional activities. 2 runners-up will receive prize packages as well, and all entries will be included in a "second-chance" prize drawing. The total value of prizes is more than $6,000."

Think you've got what it takes? Then enter Skooba Design's Master of the Digital Universe contest. It sounds like fun!

Skooba Design Contest Now Over

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 03:11 PM

http://www.skoobadesign.com/product...rough-brief-40/

Our giveaway contest for the Skooba Design Checkthrough Brief is now over, and the randomly drawn winner is...Neil Enns! Here's Neil's rather interesting travel story:

"On my last business trip I was flying to Austin. I got into the security line and realized I didn't have my wallet. I quickly called my wife and she turned around back to the airport in case my wallet was in the car. Nope. So I had no ID, no credit cards, no cash. And my house is more than 40 minutes from the airport so there was no way to go home and get it in time. What did I do?

I grabbed the $40 in cash my wife had and got on the plane. Yes, that's right. On the plane. Thanks to reading BoingBoing I knew that you don't actually need ID to fly. You just have to be ready for some extra scrutiny. The TSA supervisor gave me a stern lecture, but you could tell she was amused and she was nice about it. They had to call some special number, I had to answer some questions to "prove" who I was, sign an affidavit, submit to secondary screening, and that was it. Even the secondary screener was apologetic when he couldn't find the big stamp they needed to put on my boarding card to say I was clear to fly. My wife found my wallet at home and FedExed it to my hotel. It cost $28, and was at the front desk by 8:30am the next day. Fun stuff!"

Thanks to everyone that entered! I enjoyed reading the stories - some of them gave me a good chuckle. Thanks also to Skooba Design for the donation of this bag. I hope you'll enjoy it Neil!

"Currently I have a 200 gig system drive that I back up only the personal documents and settings folders to a separate, external 160 gig drive; basically my CYA drive to prevent my wife from killing me over digital photos that haven't yet been burned to backup disks. I'd probably swap out the main system drive for a larger drive, then use the 200 gig drive as a secondary storage drive with a recurring Robocopy task to provide a secondary backup copy of all the essential files. Definitely would make things better on the family computer!

Congrats cmchavez! Stay tuned for more contests everyone...

Hard Drive Giveaway: I've Got 3350 GB of Storage to Give Away

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 11:00 AM

In a discussion thread that started talking about my collection of old RAM, I mentioned that I had a bunch of "small, old hard drives" that I didn't have any use for, and the response when I stated the capacities was quite amusing - my definition of "old" is any hard drive older than two years, and "small" is anything under 500 GB or so. A few people in that discussion thread are still using sub-100 GB hard drives, so it seemed like it was time for a giveaway!

I have seven hard drives in total to give away, ranging from a new 750 GB drive down to a 300 GB drive. All told, I have 3350 GB in storage up for grabs. The drives in this giveaway are:

  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 750 GB (SATA)
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500 GB (SATA)
  • Western Digital Caviar 500 GB (SATA)
  • Western Digital Caviar 500 GB (SATA)
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400 GB (SATA)
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400 GB (SATA)
  • Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300 GB (PATA)

So here's how this going to work: every week for seven weeks I'm going to give away one of the drives. Each contest will be the same as this one: all you have to do is post a message telling me how you'd use the hard drive. Will you replace the hard drive in a current computer? What size is your current drive? Or add it to a current system as a backup drive? Or will you put the drive in an enclosure? Post one message in the discussion thread. I'll select the winner at random. Once you win one of the contests, you're out of the running for the next contests in this series. Each winner will be contacted via private forum message and they'll have 72 hours to respond to claim their prize - so be sure email notifications are turned on for your forum account. The last contest I ran someone missed out on winning a prize because they didn't reply to my message for two weeks!

The drive I'm giving away in this first contest is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400 GB drive. This contest will close on Thursday the 27th at 12 noon GMT -7. Enter now!

UPDATE: The contest is completed, and the winner is dirtboy. Thanks to everyone for entering! Many more hard drive giveaways coming up...
